Johnston, Iowa is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The name "Johnston" was given to the town by John Johnston, an early settler and a namesake of Johnston County. The first European settlement in what is now Johnston County was made by Captain George Washington in 1824. He named it for his friend and neighbor James Johnston of Virginia. A post office called "Johnston" was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1853, the Ulysses S Grant Administration built a military fort on the Cedar River near present-day Reynoldsburg to prevent Sioux Indians from attacking settlers near Council Bluffs. The fortifications were abandoned in 1865 when Fort Snelling (later called Des Moines) became the capital of Iowa Territory and Johnston City was laid out as its new county seat. The original town site lay on land that would later become Reedsburg; however, because there were no suitable river channels for wagon travel north from Illinois due to natural obstacles such as mountain ranges, most settlers settled around what is now city limits today. In 1868, part of what is now downtown Johnston was burned down during a storm; however, this did not discourage development and by 1870 the downtown area included several stores and two churches." In 1886 local resident William Denton donated land to build a school across from modern-day downtown Johnston on First Street between Market and State streets; this school remained open until 1978 when it closed due to financial difficulties brought about by economic recession within the community. A Methodist Episcopal church also operated briefly in downtown Johnston before being destroyed by fire in 1896 while undergoing renovation; this event served as impetus for construction of present day First Baptist Church which replaced both earlier religious buildings located on Main Street east of Second Avenue with their current structure overlooking First Street between Market and State Streets."

Johnston, Iowa was founded in 1854 by John A. Johnston, a landowner and politician. The town was named for Johnston's father-in-law, James H. Johnston. In the years since its founding, the town has been an important center for agricultural production and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1840s and 1850s. The first settler in Johnston was John Pritchard, who arrived in 1851. The town grew rapidly after it was platted in 1854; within five years, it had a population of 100 people. By 1860, Johnston had a population of 1,500 people and became an important hub on the virtual Underground Railroad network connecting abolitionists with safe havens in Canada and Illinois. Johnston experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to its position as an agricultural center and its role as a stopping point on the Underground Railroad. The town also attained notoriety for being one of only two U.S towns to be destroyed by fire (the other being Hannibal). Thanks to its location close to major transportation hubs like Chicago and Des Moines, Johnston remained highly active throughout much of this period of growth. However, following World War II there were several declines in economic activity that led to some loss of jobs and community decline over time.
