The Johnston, Iowa Coast Guard Station was established in 1933. The original station consisted of a launch ramp and a harbor. In 1957, the station became an air traffic control tower. The present station was built in 1973. It contains a Launch Ramp, Harbor, and Control Tower.

Johnston is a small town in southern Iowa, located on the edge of the Black Hills. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–East Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Johnston was founded in 1855 by John Johnston and his wife, Catharine Green. The Johnston family ran a general store and post office here until 1865 when they moved to Ottumwa, Iowa. In 1869, as part of a land boom in Iowa, John Johnston sold what is now Johnston to James Hettinger for $2,000. Hettinger built a log cabin here and named it "Hettinger's Cabin". In 1880, he became the first white settler in what would become Johnston County. The Panic of 1893 destroyed many businesses in Iowa and Johnstown recovered quickly with new businesses opening up including a grocery store (1895), bakery (1901), hotel (1905), bank (1909), and car dealership (1910). By 1912 there were 10 stores in town and 5 schools. By 1914 there were 12 stores and 10 schools; however, World War I caused many jobs to go away and the town declined slightly until its revival during World War II when it grew rapidly with new businesses such as an aircraft plant (1945) and agricultural products company (1950). The post-war period saw growth again with more retail outlets but also some loss of jobs due to technology changes such as moving manufacturing fromIowa City to later plants outside of Iowa City which led to job losses throughout most of downtown Johnstontown The current Main Street plaza was designed by architects Weyers & Bartlett in 1977 as part of an effort to revitalize downtown Johnstontown after years of decline during the 1970s through 1980s while all other aspects of town life continued unchanged or changed very little despite earlier growth that had resulted in over 100 structures existing on Main Street when it opened There are currently no plans for any major development beyond maintaining street level retail while keeping most functions within city limits instead which has led some residents to feel that city government seems too focused on developing nearby West Des Moines rather than seeking input from residents about their needs
