They named the city after their infant son, John McLaughlin Jr., who was born on the banks of the Des Moines River. The tree is still present today and it has been said that Captain McLaughlin would often sit under the tree and watch people passing by on Second Street. In 1916, Mrs. Ethel Jepsen donated a “seaplane” to Johnston as a gift from her brother-in-law, Mr. Harry Kendall Sr.. This plane could fly at high altitudes and had an interesting history - it was used by American Expeditionary Forces during World War I! In 1922, Mayor James Pogue presented City Hall with two boats – one called the “Queen Elizabeth” and another called the “Plymouth Mariner” – as gifts from his father-in-law, Commodore George Fenton Jr.. These boats were later renamed the “Johnston Lighthouse Boat” and “Jupiter Reef Lighthouse Boat” respectively. Johnston was founded in 1855 by John W. Johnston, a Methodist minister. The town was named for Johnston's father, who had been killed in a hunting accident while serving as a military officer in Mexico. In the early years of its existence, Johnston was a small farming community with only a few homes and an out-of-the-way store. But over time it grew into one of the largest towns in Iowa. Johnston became known for its agricultural products, which included corn, wheat, oats, butter and other goods. Its citizens also produced coal and oil shale near their downtown area. The town also experienced some growth during the late 19th century when businesses such as theaters and breweries were established. But by the turn of the 20th century things began to decline in Johnston due to advances in transportation and industry elsewhere in Iowa. By 1920 only 7 percent of its population remained within the limits of the original town site; most of the remainder had moved away or died since then. But despite this decline, Johnston has continued to be an important community throughout its history. It is home to several museums including the Iowa State Fairgrounds Museum and Queen City Heritage Museum which are open tothe public every day from 9am to 4pm (closed Dec 22nd). It also contains two restaurants - Garcia's Mexican restaurant situated on Main Street and Frito Pie located on Union street - as well as many shops including Hecker Hardware on Broadway Street and Sears & Roebuck on Cedar Rapids Boulevard. And finally, it is still considered an active center for religious services with churches existing at both main streets (Johnston United Methodist Church being particularly noteworthy) as well as smaller congregations scattered throughouttowns across Iowa
Johnston was founded in 1867 by John C. Johnston, a farmer and surveyor. The town was named for Johnston's older brother, James C. Johnston, who died in 1851. The first post office was established in 1868, and the current one was built in 1902. The town has a population of about 1800 people today.
