The Johnston World War I Expeditionary Force was an American military unit that served in the European theater of World War I. The force was composed of soldiers from Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The Expeditionary Force was first organized on October 15, 1914. It consisted of 1,200 men from six states. The force sailed for France on November 3rd and arrived in Arras on November 11th. From there the Expeditionary Force marched to Belgium where they participated in the Battle of Mons on November 16th. After the battle, the Expeditionary Force advanced to Dunkirk where they engaged in combat against British forces. On December 7th, 1914, aftermath of the Battle of Vimy Ridge led to a strategic retreat for American forces and ended the war with America as world champions.
