Keokuk is a small town in eastern Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1854 by John Fenton and his wife Eliza. The town's name comes from the Oglala Sioux word "k'eoh-koo-ka". The first post office was opened in 1855. Keokuk has been the county seat of Scott County since 1868. As of the 2010 census, the population of Keokuk was 11,723. The village of Keokuk was originally founded on this site in 1854 by John Fenton and his wife Eliza. The first post office was opened in 1855, and it remained open until 1964. In that year, the county seat moved to Marshalltown. Today, Keokuk is a small town with a population of only 10,000 residents. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Des Moines and 30 miles (48 km) west of Omaha. In 1862, General Ulysses S Grant led an army through Iowa into Missouri during the Civil War as part of his Overland Campaigns. Heading south from Springfield Armory under cover of darkness on July 5-6, he reached Keokuk early on July 7th after traveling for more than three days over rough country roads without encountering any opposition at all - an event which helped establish Kansas City as the new Union capital while also establishing Kekuchek as one of Grant's most important stops along his route toojestioning Vicksburg Harbor). On July 8th General Ulysses S Grant met with Chief Joseph Miles at Kekuchek Creek where they agreed to work together to remove Confederate forces from Kansas City so that hostilities could be ended peacefully; this eventually led tothe Battle Of Prairie du Chien where Confederate General David Hunter was killed and many Union soldiers were captured including Brigadier General James Longstreet who became Commandant at Fort Worth Arsenal later that year.. In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln called for troops to be deployed against Confederate forces near here following news reports that Mobile Bay had been evacuated due to blockade running by Confederate Admiral CSS Alabama followed shortly thereafter by news reports that Mobile Bay had been burned down - actions which finally forced secessionist Governor Andrew Johnson into action resulting in martial law being declared throughout much of Iowa including Keokuk.. In 1870 Hennepin County established its own jail here after construction began on what would become known as "eminence Park" – within minutes inmates started arriving daily from all over central Iowa & surrounding counties exhausted & starving due largely to lack thereof available food banks or hospitals nearby – conditions exacerbated by use local sandstone quarries for fortifications instead providing needed building stone for other nearby military installations necessitating closing mines & mills prior to release inmates ensuring continued impoverishment statewide ↑
The first Keokuk post office was established in 1871. The town was named for Colonel John C. Keokuk, a Union officer who fought in the Civil War. In 1905, the Iowa State Legislature approved the name of the town to honor General David Dixon and his victory at Pea Ridge.
