The Keokuk, Iowa Coast Guard Station has been providing safety and security on the Iowa-Wisconsin border since 1892. The station is home to the state's only helicopter squadron and a number of other firsts in coast guard history. Coast guard gift history begins with Captain John A. Dye who was appointed commander in 1892. He served for over 40 years until his retirement in 1916. During his time as commander, Dye developed the Coast Guard's first helicopter squadron and helped establish many of the department’s current capabilities. Captain Arthur J. Kapp took over from Captain Dye as commandant in 1916 and held that position until his resignation in 1940. Under Captain Kapp’s guidance, the Coast Guard established a shore patrol service along the Wisconsin-Iowa border and began conducting maritime patrols offshore during World War II. Captain Harry Toth assumed command of the station following Captain Kapp’s retirement in 1945 and held that position until his death in 1951. During Captain Toth’s tenure, he also led development of several new vessels including both helicopters and an amphibious vessel called “Hercules” which became one of Iowa's most iconic tourist destinations). In 1972, Commodore James Hoke succeeded Commodore Toth as captain of the station after serving for two years during Mayor Bruce Raley's term as governor (Hoke would later serve as mayoralty candidate). Under Commodore Hoke’s leadership, the Coast Guard developed a searchlight system capable of spotting submarines operating near our state coastline; this system remains one of our department’s primary assets today! In 1984, Commodore Hoke was replaced by Commander David Iverson who would hold that position until his retirement in 1990. Commander Iverson played an important role during both world wars while also developing new equipment such as radar technology which continues to be used by our department today! In 1993, Commandant Don Eikenbach took over from Commander Iverson becoming Keokuk's first female officer! She would remain at Keokuk through her retirement in 2001 before being reassigned to Des Moines where she currently works for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration!

Keokuk is a city in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The population was 37,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The first permanent settler in Keokuk was Nicholas Sargent, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Moines River. Sargent and his wife, Sally (Henderson), were the parents of Sarah Hennigan Sargent and John A. Henderson. In 1837, James Fenton arrived in Keokuk from Illinois with his family. He started a blacksmith shop and also raised chickens and pigs on his farm south of town. In 1840, Fenton married Sarah Henderson; they had two children: James Fenton Jr., who became an abolitionist and served as mayor of Peoria, Illinois (1850-55) and Mary Jane Fenton Pemberton (1851-65). Fenton's wife played an important role in early Keokuk society; she helped to organize local churches and acted as secretary to several key community leaders including Methodist preacher Ebenezer Scranton IV and businessman Reuben Atkins III. She also founded Keokuk Female Academy which still operates today as one of the leading colleges for women in Iowa City area
The Coast Guard Gift History is an important part of the Coast Guard’s history. The gift history starts with the creation of the Coast Guard in 1920. At that time, it was not a separate agency like the FBI or CIA. It was created as part of the Department of Commerce and Labor which also included the Maritime Commission and the Treasury Department. The Coast Guard had its first gift from King George VI on November 8, 1921. That gift was a camera for use by law enforcement officers on boats patrol off Long Island Sound. After World War II, gifts increased as donations from various people poured in to help support the Coast Guard. During this time, some famous donors include Franklin D Roosevelt, Harry S Truman and Lyndon Johnson. Gift giving stopped during The Depression but resumed after World War II thanks to large donations from individuals and businesses alike. In 1969, President Richard Nixon established what is now called The National Christmas Tree Foundation which donated 1 million trees to be placed at different locations around America every year during Christmas season. This tradition continued until 1999 when it was discontinued due to budgetary reasons. Since then, larger donations have been common but smaller ones have also been common such as making a donation in memory of someone who has passed away or being able to give back something you purchased in the past such as a book or piece of jewelry.( See below.)

On July 3, 1847, a group of men from Keokuk and other towns in Iowa organized the first Territorial Legislature in what would become the United States. The group consisted of men from Keokuk, Clinton, and surrounding township. On October 11th, they voted to form a new state called Des Moines County.
