Keokuk is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 37,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Keokuk County. The first permanent settler in Keokuk was James White on February 14, 1846. At the time, it was located on the present-day border of Newton and Polk counties. In 1851, following the Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854 which repealed Missouri's admission as a state to the Union, Keokuk became part of Nebraska Territory. As part of this territory, it had its own government under the auspices of a board appointed by Nebraska Governor John C. Fremont. In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Keokuk served as an arsenal and military post for Illinois Brigade General Samuel Davenport Butler and other Union troops stationed in Iowa Territory along with Fort Dodge on the Des Moines River south of Sioux City. On May 9th 1865, after Confederate General Robert Ewell's Raid on Omaha that destroyed much livestock and crops in central Iowa and surrounding states including Nebraska Territory On October 1st 1865 Keokuk voters passed a $5 per week tax to help fund reconstruction efforts following Ewell's Raid. The city would be hit hard by Reconstruction Kentucky Fever as many farmers left to find work elsewhere. By 1870 there were only 50 residents living in what is now downtown Keokuk; however businesses continued to grow due to increased transportation needs brought about by railroad construction around town. By 1880 there were over 200 residents living in downtown KeokUK; however business growth slowed due to new technology becoming available outside town at that time.

During prohibition

Following repeal of prohibition in America in 1917 downtownKeOKuka experienced rapid growth once again as bars and restaurants sprung up all around town serving bootlegged alcohol made from grains bought from traders who exported liquor into Europe. < p align=center>City Directory

In 1854, the Keokuk and Yorktown Railroad was built between Keokuk, Iowa and Yorktown, Illinois. The railroad was used to transport goods from the Midwest to the East Coast. In 1892, the Keokuk and Yorktown Railroad was merged into the Chicago-Kansas City Railway.
