In Muscatine, Iowa, military gift history can be traced back to the early 1800s. The city was founded in 1849 by General James K. Polk and was named after him. In 1871, the first post office in Muscatine opened. At that time, there were only a few families living in the city and most of its residents came from neighboring towns. The first soldiers to come to Muscatine were members of the 8th Cavalry Regiment stationed at Fort Dodge. In 1870, the 7th Infantry Regiment arrived and soon afterward the 1st Cavalry Regiment arrived as well. These units garrisoned the city until 1895 when they left for other assignments around the Midwest. However, during World War I (1914-1918), Muscatine played an important role in helping with troop deployment on both sides of the conflict. In 1915, General John J Pershing ordered all American forces in Europe to be organized into divisions which would eventually become brigades under command of corps commanders. 1st Brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Arthur G Neuman housed here at Ft Dodge while 2nd Brigade under Major General John M Cota deployed near Arras France; 3rd Brigade under Brigadier General George W Hodge redeployed from Britain; 4th Brigade located at Mons Belgium; 5th Brigade over seas at Guantanamo Bay Cuba; 6th Brigade landed near Salonika Turkey on April 10 1918 as part of Army Group Bey transferred from army group effort between Balkans theatre and Western Front) Muscatine’s role during World War I is commemorated with a monument dedicated to local veterans who served during this time period located on Main Street across from City Hall

In 1870 (just prior to statehood), railroad construction began through what is now MuscatINE; this led to an increased demand for goods and services from the townspeople and helped spur economic growth that continues to this day. During World War II (1939-1945), MuskatINE served as one of four U S Military locations along with Omaha Beachhead Naval Air Station(now O'Hare International Airport)and POW/mock airfields used by U S forces during World War II including Igloo Field near Marshalltown and White Sands Missile Range east of Sioux City serving as targets for aircraft flown from these ranges into Germany during operations called “Dalmatian” or “Gulfstream” flights thus providingtarget practice for American pilots while they flew missions over Nazi concentration campssites throughout Europe).
