Muscatine, Iowa is a town in Dodge County, Iowa, United States. The population was 561 at the 2010 census. The Muscatine post office was established in 1875 and discontinued operation in 1931. The town of Muscatine was platted on May 6, 1875 by a group of men led by George Pritchard. It was named for Captain Muscatine who had been killed during the American Civil War. A gristmill and sawmill were built in the town and operated until 1907 when they were replaced by a cotton gin and an oil well. The oil well went dry in 1916 and production stopped but the mill continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1951. The mill building is now used as a community center. The first store opened in Muscatine on October 3, 1881. It was run by Mrs. Jno Fields with help from her husband James Fields Jr.. At that time, there were only three stores open among all of Dodge County! By 1932, there were twelve stores open along with two grocery stores and one hotel! In 1925, the first movie theater opened in Muscatine with seating for 150 people! That theater remains operational to this day! Muscatine, Iowa is a small town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 535 at the 2000 census. The area now known as Muscatine was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s. It became a community in 1851 and a city in 1895. The first settler in what is now Muscatine was John Laughlin, who arrived on his farmstead near present-day Black Hawk Road and First Street on February 25, 1834. Laughlin's brother-in-law, James Fenton, also came to the area that year and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1840, Elijah Smith platted an area around what is now Meridian Avenue and First Streets for housing development. In 1852, Muscatine was named after General William Tecumseh Sherman's Order of Battle No. 5 which entitled him "a Commander of Infantry." At that time it consisted of eighty men under command of Colonel George Armstrong Custer (the Seventh Cavalry). On October 6th of that year, Sherman's brigade crossed the river at Indianola Landing southwest of present day Muscatine and began operations against the Sioux Nation commanded by Chief Iron Tail. On November 17th they reached Fort Atkinson where they camped for two days before moving northeast across the Minnesota River to engage Sioux defenders at Rosebud Creek northwest of present day South Manchester Township. Unfortunately for Union troops their supply depot were destroyed just east of Rosebud Creek while they were besieging Fort Donelson; result: Confederate forces continued their march westward through India Grove Canyon until reaching Mississippi Park about December 1st - allowing Federal forces to cross the river unopposed "On November 17th they reached Fort Atkinson where they camped for two days before moving northeast across the Minnesota River to engage Sioux defenders at Rosebud Creek northwest of present day South Manchester Township."
