In 1902, a man named Harry Wagoner opened up his own grocery store and started selling ground coffee too. In 1928, another grocery store called The News joined forces with The Grapes to form what is now known as Newton Coffee Co. It was at this point that the popularity of caffeine really took off for Newton residents! Over time, other businesses have followed suit and today there are over 12 different businesses that sell freshly roasted or ground coffees from Newton's many years of experience as a center for roasting and buying coffee!

Newton, Iowa coffee history begins in the early 1800s when a group of farmers in that town began growing coffee. The first beans were grown on a farmstead northwest of Newton. By 1845, the town had several small grocery stores and two hotels. Coffee was being roasted and sold at these businesses until the late 1800s.
Newton is a small town in the east central section of Iowa, United States. The population was 1,548 at the 2010 census. Newton is part of the Jackson County metropolitan area. It is named for Isaac Newton, an English scientist who developed calculus and first used it to prove that falling bodies cause physical changes that can be measured. Newton was founded as a log cabin community in 1856 by two brothers, John A. and James W. Newton. The first post office was established in 1857 and the first store opened in 1860. The community name originated from "Newton's Well" on the property where residents gathered water for their cattle and horses during summers during early days of this statehood. The town grew rapidly due to its location along US Highway 24 which made it easy to transport goods and people between Des Moines and points west. In 1916, Newton became one of four communities within Jackson County created when it was divided into three parts based on county boundaries then being redrawn following the Flooding of Cedar Rapids (which destroyed much of downtown Cedar Rapids). In 1934, Newton incorporated as a city under Iowa Code Section 515a which limited municipalities’ powers until 1938 when they were again allowed to pass ordinances with more power granted through an act called the Newtons Act which stated: "No ordinance passed by any municipality shall be invalidated or repealed except upon presentation to Andover Township by three-fifths vote of all members thereof being present at such meeting." An act passed by Andover Township allowed for annexation by Newton on December 12, 1984 pursuant to Iowa Code Section 763A(2). This led to some controversy as many citizens felt they had been robbed after not getting what they thought would be an equal share in annexation considering that their village had been smaller than newtown since at least 1957! On July 10th 2009 $1 million dollars was set aside in 3 estate accounts within Newton so that residents may start anew if necessary or experienced setbacks while starting over should things not work out with their current village/township situation
