From the early 1800s until World War II, Newton was a center of coffee production in Iowa. In 1875, James Southerland and his brother-in-law David Hill founded the first commercial Java plant in what is now Newton. The Java trade brought attention to Newton, and by 1885, it had become the second largest town in Iowa with a population of 1,500. In 1907, local farmers started marketing coffee as "Newton Coffee". In World War II, Newton became an important military installation because of its strategic location on the Des Moines River. The town was also home to USAAF Station Newton-Kingman which served as the main airfield for bomber planes during World War II. In 1949, when the Des Moines metropolitan area expanded into new neighborhoods outside of downtown Des Moines, Newton slowly began to lose its status as a center for coffee production. However, since 2001–2003 efforts have been made to revive the community's coffee industry by restoring some of its historical buildings and property.

Newton, Iowa is a small town located in the northwest corner of Des Moines County. The population was 724 at the 2010 census. Newton is part of the Sioux City–Iowa City, IA-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newton was founded in 1847 by Isaac Newton and his wife Sarah. The Newtons were among the first settlers in what is now Des Moines County. In 1851, they moved to their present location and started a grocery store on Third Street. In 1861, they built a home on Second Avenue near Mills Road.Their store and home were destroyed by a fire in 1865, but they rebuilt their home and store. They continued to operate their businesses until 1957 when they donated all their assets to the Methodist Church which operated it as a homeless shelter until 1976 when it became the Newton Homeless Shelter Incorporated. In 1907, Isaac Newton Jr., grandson of Isaac Newton Sr., began farming land around what is now Newton on behalf of his father-in-law John Fenton Kneeland III. He named this area "Kneeland Prairie" after John Fenton Kneeland III (1801-1876), an early settler in Des Moines County who had helped organize Iowa's agricultural community during the 1800s. Kneeland Prairie was later developed into what is now downtown Newton with its two blocks of fashionable brick buildings dating back to 1922 that are still used as storage spaces for local farmers' markets and other events throughout the year. Through his donations, Isaac Newton Jr.'s estate gave $2 million to establish Iowa Wesleyan University in 1925 and $5 million more over seven years to continue building campus growth across 12 acres east of First Baptist Church on Whitney Boulevard between Harrison Road and Hancock Road NW). Today IWU has more than 26,000 students from 128 countries studying arts & sciences – making us one of Iowa's leading universities statewide!
