In 1867, North Liberty became part of what was then called Indian Territory and remained so until it became statehood in 1907. At that time, it became known as North Liberty County. During World War II, North Liberty came alive with activity related to the manufacture of munitions. A number of companies were based here including American Can Company, Phelps Dodge Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Company and General Dynamics Corporation. After the war ended, many jobs went away and violence continued to be an issue in the area until the early 1970s when attitudes changed towards crime and drugs started to improve. Today, there are few active businesses remaining within North Liberty but many residents still enjoy living there because it is an affordable community with plenty of opportunities for education and work opportunities both inside and outside of their homes.
