North Liberty, Iowa is a small town in Iron County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,427 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Sioux City–Des Moines metropolitan area. North Liberty was founded in 1875 by settlers from New York City and Buffalo. The town's first post office was established in 1876. In 1916, North Liberty became an incorporated village. On September 25, 2008, North Liberty had its last municipal meeting and incorporation as a village expired due to lack of voter turnout. On November 3rd of that year residents of the Village voted to dissolve as a municipality and create a new township called "North Liberty Township". This move came after years of discussions among the community members about whether they wanted to keep their name or change it to something more reflective of their community's current identity as a small town with strong agricultural roots on one side and large metropole (Sioux City) on the other side - but ultimately decided that they would continue to be known as NorthLiberty Township Residents
North Liberty was founded in 1855 by Captain George P. Smith and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for the north bank of the Iowa River, which is where it first grew. North Liberty's early years were difficult because of its location on a remote and dangerous section of the frontier. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant decided to move the American Civil War army from Mississippi to Iowa because he felt that northern Iowa would be a better place to fight. General Grant's army arrived in North Liberty on July 12, 1865, and helped start what would become known as the "Iowa Corn Rebellion." The rebels were eventually defeated and many of them were executed or sent to prison. After the war ended, North Liberty slowly began to grow again thanks to new settlers and businesses who started coming there after the war. By 1880, North Liberty had reached its current size with over 100 residents.
