The United States National Guard was founded on July 1, 1916. The Iowa National Guard's first battalion was activated in the town of Cedar Rapids and organized as the 99th Infantry Regiment. The first national guard unit to serve in World War I was the 128th Infantry Regiment, which served in France and Belgium. In 1934, the Department of Defense transferred control of the Iowa National Guard to State ownership. The state also became responsible for providing personnel and equipment for state units with a federal mission, including the Iowa National Guard. In 1949, the Iowa National Guard changed its name to the Iowa Army National Guards. The North Liberty, Iowa National Guard was established on December 16, 1861. The unit was originally called the 2nd Iowa Infantry Regiment. It became the 1st Iowa Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1862. On November 8, 1862, it was redesignated as the 3rd Iowa Infantry Regiment and on January 9, 1863 it became the 4th Iowa Infantry Regiment. It changed its name again to the North Liberty National Guard on October 12, 1864. The regiment was disbanded on May 10, 1865.
North Liberty is located in Johnson County, Iowa. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. North Liberty is the smallest municipality in Iowa and it has only one street. It is bordered by the town of South Sioux City to the east and west, and Mount Pleasant to the north. The name "north liberty" comes from a location on High Prairie where General John A. Logan had his headquarters during the American Civil War. General Logan's army camped for a night near what is now North Liberty in 1864. From that night until he was killed three years later, General Logan used this area as his winter quarters. In 1881, when flour mills began operations in Johnson County, they needed land to expand their operation and so they bought 4 acres of high ground south of present-day North Liberty from William Aiken (a white man). This site became known as Aiken Township because it served as the townsite for all six of those communities – Clear Lake/North Liberty, West Des Moines/Mount Pleasant, East Des Moines/New Hamptonville, Cedar Rapids/Easton (now Cedar Rapids), and Waterloo (now Waterloo)). The first post office in North Liberty was established in 1887; it was called Clear Lake Post Office. In 1912 there were nine post offices in Johnson County: Clear Lake/North Liberty (the old name of Clear Lake Township), West Des Moines/Mount Pleasant, East Des Moines/New Hamptonville, Cedar Rapids/Easton (now Cedar Rapids), Waterloo (now Waterloo)), and Mount Pleasant Post Office which closed five years later. A store opened on Main Street near present-day Burlington Elementary School around 1903; it became known as First National Bank & Trust Company after national banks merged into First National Corporation in 1907. The bank went out of business around 1917 but its building still stands today on Elm Street near Old Burlington High School which served as its primary business district until 1969 when it moved to downtown Sioux City Processing Plant across I-235 from the Iowa State Capitol Building before being demolished in 1984 due to corrosion problems). After First National failed within two years of opening its doors due to financial troubles brought about by World War I debt issues*, a new bank named State Street Banks opened up shop on Superior Avenue just east of rural Oskaloosa* which successfully completed liquidations between 1923 and 1929 bringing an end to many small businesses that would have gone under if not for advances made by State Street Banks president Franklin Wickersham*. During this time period also another grocery store called Dutch Brosnered opened up on Fourth Avenue opposite Presentation Middle School which continued operating until 1978 concurrent withState Street Banks closing down nearby*) In 1930 State Street Banks merged with Omaha Municipal Bank becoming Omaha National Bank.* Today Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company operates Kossuth Savings & Loan Association located at 401 N Broadway Suite 1400 inside Northern Illinois University’s Heidegger Pavilion building next door.)* When people started arriving here from other parts of Iowa during the early 1800s they started trading goods with local farmers who grew corn or wheat according to weather conditions at that time plus whatever animals were available or draft horses could be found guarding these properties sinceroads leading into these areas then were dirt roads still today making travel difficult or impossible without special equipment even though McLennan Road has been built over most of this terrain over the past few hundred years! There wasn't much development happening here until more people arrived starting with families coming here during Reconstruction Era following America's reconstruction process following Civil War! People who had come here prior were mostly farmers who raised livestock or raised crops while others mined coal saltpetre lead ore zinc ores etcetera! Many shops operated along main streets like Second National Bank (founded 1865) residents cooked their meals at their homes while doing some banking activities such as loans etcetera so no one really realized how important stores are until things changed during World Wars II when everyone got busy working outside instead Of going back home to help out!! The National Guard has a long and diverse history, most notably in the United States. The National Guard was first organized on April 12, 1792, when the First Continental Congress ordered all male citizens of the colonies to assemble at New York City to volunteered for military duty. In 1824, President James K. Polk signed an act that created the Army of the United States as a permanent branch of the federal government. The National Guard reorganized on July 1, 1928 into three brigades: cavalry (the 1st Brigade), infantry (the 2nd Brigade), and artillery (the 3rd Brigade). On October 29, 1935, both rifle companies were consolidated into a battalion and named Company E of the 133rd Infantry Regiment (National Guards) nicknamed “The Big Red Ones” because their uniforms resembled those worn by American soldiers fighting in World War I. At least one regiment from each state formed part of federally organized militia during World War II- Connecticut’s 165th Infantry Regiment became known as “The Golden State Warriors” due to its color scheme which included yellow stars on olive drab uniforms; Massachusetts’ 149th Infantry Regiment became known as “The Green Berets”; West Virginia's 71st Infantry Regiment became known as “The White Sands Rangers”; New Mexico's 131st Infantry Regiment became known as "The Lobos" and Arizona's 79th Infantry Battalion became "Sunshine Squadron." On September 14, 1954 duplicate company insignia for each brigade were authorized. These new units were redesignated brigades within brigades on November 1, 1955- this change also reflected changes made to army doctrine following World War II in which artillery units had been converted from field artillery organizations into self-propelled howitzers equipped with artillery weapons systems instead of cannons or rifles. Each brigade armor detachment was redesignated a regiment upon conversion while remaining attached to its parent brigade until relieved by another unit or disbanded altogether. On May 7, 1957 Headquarters/ Headquarters Troop (HHT) detached from 3rd Brigade headquarters at Fort Worth Texas and moved directly to Fort Worth Air Force Base where it would become Combat Arms Control Command's focal point for all nuclear arms control activities worldwide under then Commander General Curtis LeMay Jr.. The 3rd Brigade designation was revived effective November 1 1958 when Headquarters/ Headquarters Troop reassigned back to 3rd Brigade HQ at Fort Worth AFB pending final disposition of some equipment which had been assigned there during their tour with HHT before relocating back home in 1959 . On November 5 1961Combat Arms Control Command activated Tactical Missile Forces-(TACAF)-a commandizing unit subordinate only to Special operations forces commanders who controlled nuclear weapons use within theater-becoming operational immediately thereafter under then Deputy Commander General Maxwell Diggs Jr.. TACAF operated out of Lackland AFB TX untilactivated on December 15 1974 pursuant thereto by Defense Directive No 006-1974 titled "Defense Countermeasures Activities In Space". The command reverted back again Operational Status on January 8 1975 when TACAF relocated permanently once again headquartered at Offutt AFB KS being concurrently activated Joint Task Force -Space under then Deputy Commander General John Poindexter Jr.. On February 4 1979 elements participated in Operation Just Cause~ Global Strike Offensive~ counterattack against Nicaraguan rebels located inside Costa Rica~ subsequently resulting in Nicaragua losing more than two thousand people killed including over seventy percent of its entire population living outside its borders~~ Operations El Dorado Canyon~ subsequent objectives involved dismantling Marxist revolutionary training camps inside Nicaragua~~ Later that year portions deployed throughout Central America participated in Operation Eagle Claw~ abortive expedition mounted against Guatemalan separatists guerillas operating primarily within Guatemala Pradesh territorially~~ As previously noted Tactical Missile Forces-(TACAF) continued operation until activation by order Of Admiral Mike Mullen on October 6 1984 pursuant TO Presidential Instruction Number 1045 entitled "Providing For Management And Use Of Missiles By The U S Government"). Today active components include: 16 Regular Army battalions totaling 9200 men currently mobilized plus 5 Expeditionary Brigades totaling 8000 men mobilized plus 2 Marine Corps Battalions totaling 400 Marines currently mobilizedplus 11 airmobile battalions presently mobilizedplus 172 special operations forces detachments numbered between 25and 350 men numbering between 25and 75men currently activated plus 173 community service troops numbers ranging from 20to 100 men presently mobilizedplus 108 battlefield intelligence analysts numbering between 30and 120 man currently activated plus 46 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Units numbered between 50and 200 man originally organized but now inactive pending replacement plans
