Air Force gifts have been a part of the Sioux City community for over fifty years. The Air Force has donated many items, including tools and equipment, to Sioux City through various programs. In 1948, the Army took over Dodge County Airport and continued to operate it until it closed in 1968. From this point on, Sioux City became its own municipally owned airport serving primarily military aviation needs until 1993 when it reverted back to the Air Force as Grand Forks Municipal Airport. Since then, both the Air Force and Navy have made donations to Sioux City through various programs and events. The Sioux City Air Force Base gift history can be traced back to World War II. In 1942, the Iowa Division of Aeronautics submitted a proposal for a bomber squadron at Sioux City Air Force Base. The first Bombardment Squadron was activated on July 25, 1942 and was commanded by First Lieutenant George C. Kappeler. From 1944-1946, the wing operated the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers. In 1946, the wing upgraded to the Boeing E-1A Albatross aircraft and became known as "The Old Mill Squadron". From 1951-1954, it flew McDonnell Douglas F4H Phantom IIs. It transitioned to North American P-51 Mustangs in 1954 and remained active until its disbanding in 1957. In 1956, the wing became responsible for providing tactical airlift services for military exercises conducted throughout Iowa and Nebraska. The Wing also flew transports during Operation Anaconda which involved USAF involvement in relief operations following an eruption of Mount Pinatubo in southern Philippines. In 1969, it became responsible for providing Tactical Airlift Operations (TAO) support to United States embassies worldwide through the CenterAir Service program under Headquarters U S A Army Forces Europe (USAFE). As part of T apart Joint Task Force Southwest Asia (JTTF SOUTHWEST ASIAC), The Old Mill Squadron contributed two McDonnell Douglas VC-10A Joint STARS Supersonic Transport Aircraft for Operation Neptune's Spear that occurred on February 15th 1998 over Saudi ArabiaOperation Desert Storm on October 18th 1991 . On May 5th 2001 these two jets were used as backup assets when AN/TPQ-21 radar warning receivers failed due to corrosion from desert sandstorms , this incident is also documented as one of only two occasions where USAF jets have been used successfully as ground support vehicles while flying intercontinental missions
Sioux City,Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa that is the county seat for Johnson County. The population was 585 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Johnson County by population. Sioux City is home to many businesses and industries, including a large agricultural sector and an oil refinery. The city has been part of the Sioux City-Johnson County metropolitan area since its inception in 2000. It is also home to two universities: UIUC and Creighton University. The first known inhabitants of what is now Sioux City were Paleo-Indians who hunted game near the present day downtown area in the late Pleistocene epoch around 12,000 years ago. A small village was located on Depot Creek about six miles northeast of downtown when European explorers discovered it in 1795 during their exploration of what would become Iowa Territory. The creek's name was given to one of several early settlements founded by prospectors in this territory including Waterloo (now Waterloo Heights), which became Des Moines after being moved there fromCouncil Bluffs, Iowa; Fort Snelling (later renamed Prairie du Chien), which became Omaha; and Minnehaha Falls where settlers built a dam over Clearwater River to create the first artificial waterfall on the upper Missouri River system east of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania later named Minneapolis). The first permanent settler in what now Sioux City was James Wickersham who established a trading post near present day Main Street and US Highway 66 as early as 1827. Wickershams fought for Minnesota during Boer War with British forces and died at Perfecto ranch nearpresent day SiouxCity while trying to cross US Road 6 bridge into South Dakota on July 24, 1876 after his horse got stuck between logs above water level below river bank Some local historians believe he may have been killed because he refused surrendering his rifles to General George Armstrong Custer rather than let them be captured by Indians under Sitting Bull
The airforce gift history goes back to the beginning of the USAF. The USAF was founded on February 17, 1948 and consisted of only five fighter squadrons at its inception. Within a few years, however, the USAF had grown to include more than fifty squadrons. In 1955, it became clear that the USAF needed new planes to support its growing operations. Congress passed the Air Force Appropriations Act which authorized the purchase of over 350 aircraft in an effort to modernize and increase United States military strength abroad. The Air Force also purchased several satellites in this time frame in an effort to improve intelligence gathering and engage in global missile defense missions. In 1957, President Dwight D Eisenhower issued Executive Order 9066 which ordered all US air forces to become nuclear powered by July 1st, 1958. This action marked a significant change for the USAF as it had been using piston-powered bombers since World War II. With this new policy in place, United States bomber crews began transitioning from Boeing 707s and Douglas DC-7s into nuclear-powered aircraft such as McDonnell F4C/D Super Hornets and Lockheed L-1011 Starlighters. By 1962, United States strategic bombingpower was fully committedto defending America against any attack from outside sources with Operation Neptune's Spear being one of the most successful NATO airstrikes during that period. During his presidency Barack Obama made many changes within the USAF including ordering a program called "Eagle Dynamics" which aimed to create a next generation stealth fighter jet due for release by 2019 or 2020 under his watch as president
