Urbandale is an agricultural town in Iowa, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids-Des Moines-Orlando, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite of Urbandale was first surveyed in 1855 by Captain Levi Smith and other early settlers of the area. The name "Urbandale" was derived from a Sioux word meaning "place where many waterfowl gather." In 1869, James Atherton founded the first post office in Urbandale. In 1886, the name was changed to Urbandale Township. In 1907, it became a city and has since grown as one of Iowa's leading agricultural cities with its own small airport and several shopping malls. The city is home to three colleges: Des Moines State University (DSU), Drake University, and UIUC (Universidad Iberoamericana). As one of Iowa's largest metropolitan areas with over 1 million residents, Urbana also includes much smaller villages including Bensenville, Calumet City, Davenport City/Downtown Davenport Heights/West Side Park View Village/East Side Park View Village/South Side Park View Village etc., which make up the larger community within its boundaries. These villages are all separate municipalities with their own police departments and fire departments; however they are considered integral parts of Urbane as both cities have jurisdiction over them when it comes to infrastructure such as schools and hospitals

In 1881, the town became a city and continued to grow. By 1916, it had reached its peak with a population of over 50,000 people. However, during World War I the town declined as many men left for military service and later Urbandale's economy collapsed. In the 1930s, Urbandale experienced another boom as lots were sold for segregationist reasons. However, this prosperity also ended when racial discrimination against African Americans began to increase in the area. This caused many businesses to close their doors andUrbandale quickly fell into decline before finally disappearing in the 1940s due to economic stagnation and war-related factors. Today, Urbandale is only known for itsghosts which are seen around its downtown area at night
Urbandale was founded in 1879 by George H. Urbandale and his wife, Fannie. The town was named for the location of a natural gas well that had been discovered in 1867. In 1886, Urbandale became the first city in Iowa to have electric lights. In 1912, the town added a waterworks to its system and name change to Urbandale Water Works Inc. on April 1st of that year. The city's fire department was formed in 1915 and it is now known as the Urbandale Volunteer Fire Department
