Fresh roasted coffee is a popular and longstanding tradition in Waterloo, Iowa. The town was established in 1847 as a trading post between the United States and Great Britain, and the first espresso machine was invented here in 1912. The origins of fresh roasted coffee can be traced back to 1847, when General James K. Polk sent a detachment of Americans to explore the area around Waterloo. One of their observers, Captain John Cushing, noted that "the whole country round about is rich in beans", which he thought would make for good coffee grounds. A few years later, Captain Cushing met another American who had also discovered coffee near Waterloo: George Peake. Peake told Cushing that he had found beans that were "the best that ever grew" on his farm near Morningside Heights in Chicago; these beans would eventually become known as Peake's Coffee. In 1912, entrepreneur Willard Wiman opened the first espresso machine in what is now known as The Arcade on Easton Street in Waterloo. At this time, espresso machines were particularly expensive and only available to high-end customers; however, Wiman decided to sell his machines for just $1 each instead. This decision helped pioneer the modern era of caffeine drinking by making espresso more accessible to everyday people across America. In 1952, Wiman donated his entire operation - including all of his machines - to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign so that they could study how café culture could be adapted for use within larger universities. From then on, every university had its own cafe where students could enjoy freshly brewed espresso drinks from talented baristas working directly under their supervision! Waterloo, Iowa is home to the first coffee roasting company in the United States. The company was founded by two gentlemen named John and Edward Newton in 1855. The Newtons roasted coffee beans in a small town on the edge of Waterloo, Iowa. The beans were used to make iced coffee, which was served at local cafes and hotels. In 1862, the Newton family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and opened a second shop there. From here, they slowly began expanding their business into other areas of coffee production including grinding and roasting beans for export. In 1912, they relocated to Des Moines, Iowa where they remain today as one of America's most successful coffee companies.

Waterloo, Iowa is a small town located in Cedar County, Iowa. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. Waterloo is the only municipality in Cedar County. The village of Waterloo was founded in 1855 and changed its name to Waterloo in 1892. The community was laid out by George Pemberton and James Ahern and named after the ancient city of Geneva, Switzerland. It had a population of about 100 people when it was incorporated as a village on November 6, 1865. The Village Board decided to change the name because many residents were from Illinois and Wisconsin and thought that Waterloo would sound more Canadian than Swiss. Waterloo has experienced significant growth over the years; it has seen a population increase from just under 100 people in 1865 to over 1,000 by 1910. In 1951, part of the east side of town became an annexed area known as "New Town" which housed new businesses and residential developments along with public works projects such as a water main replacement project and improvements to the school district's infrastructure. The high-yield agricultural production that characterizes much of central Iowa have contributed significantly to local economic development since World War II. With recent investment by farmers into new technology for irrigation systems, yield increases are now possible even on smaller plots while maintaining reasonable environmental performance norms; consequently this type of agriculture is increasingly being called "high yielding," or "crop-oriented."

Waterloo is located just northeast of the city of Des Moines on the Missouri River about halfway between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

Waterloo was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers, primarily from the town of Webster. The town grew quickly and soon had a store, school, and Masonic Lodge. In 1841, Waterloo was incorporated as a city. A variety of industries developed in the city over the years: brickyards, tanning beds, oil refineries, wheat mills. The city experienced two significant waves of immigrants during the 1800s: Germans in the 1840s and Irish in the 1850s. The German influx changed the demographics of Waterloo significantly; before 1840 it had been largely Anglo-Saxon Protestant. The Irish influx added an entirely new community of Protestants called Catholic Slovaks to the mix. These newcomers formed their own businesses and social organizations within their new communities while also assimilating into English society. In 1865, violence erupted between Italian Americans living near downtown Waterloo and African Americans working on local farms over job opportunities; this led to increased Polish immigration to Waterloo which further changed the demographics of the city.
