Waterloo, Iowa is a city in southern Iowa. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Waterloo County and is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Area. Waterloo was founded in 1836 as a town named for General Oliver Hazard Perry by his provisional government on the banks of the Black River. The name originated from an allusion to a fur trader who had traded with the Sioux and Winnebago Indians near what is now Waterloo. The first post office in Waterloo was established in 1837, and became known as Hazardville after General Perry's official headquarters. In 1847, Indian removal began which resulted in many buildings and land holdings being lost due to conflict with settlers over land titles. In 1861, Wyoming Territorial Legislature created Waterloo County based on present-day Waterloo Township. The first courthouse in town was built in 1865; it was replaced by a new courthouse constructed downtown between 1936 and 1938. In 1870, construction began on what is now UIUC's Drake Stadium; it would be renovated and renamed State Farm Stadium following its construction. In 1984, UIUC opened its new Sanford School of Business campus located adjacent to Drake Stadium; that campus would become one of UIUC's three schools (alongside Arts & Sciences/UI College of Law and engineering school) that merged into UIUC during the 2006 merger process which also saw the closure of several other universities' campuses across central Illinois resulting in local jobs losses totaling 1 million+. In 2013-14, Drake Stadium underwent $108 million renovation which included installation of artificial turf fields making it one of college sports' most popular venues worldwide; state spending on athletics has increased since then overall as more private donations have poured into university coffers leading to increased enrollments (+5% per year) while creating some 350 full-time jobs statewide including 50+ at UIUC alone since 2011! That same year also saw $10 million put toward development around University Circle area adjacent to stadium off I-80W exit just outside town limits - this project included plans for an arena or multiple housing/professional businesses developments across 2 acres site currently occupied by retail space +/- future plans for a park featuring community gardens + More than 100 small businesses/ cottage industries will call University Circle home when completed!

The community has experienced many transformations over its history including being an agricultural center during the late 1800s; becoming a manufacturing center during World War II; and experiencing rapid growth following the opening of Interstate 80 in 1990."
