Waterloo, Iowa is a small town located in Dubuque County, Iowa. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Waterloo is the county seat of Dubuque County. It was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1855 and named for John Halden Weir, a United States Senator from New York. The first post office in Waterloo was established in 1857 and the first store was built in 1865. In 1874, Waterloo became an incorporated town. In 1925, it merged with nearby Clear Lake to form the larger city of Waterloo-Clear Lake. The city's population peaked at 21,083 in 1960 but then declined to 9,146 by 2000. Waterloo is famous for its spinning wheel which has been used since 1868 as a local source of income for the community and also for its annual summerfolk festival which draws more than 100 000 tourists each year. The town also has two Marriott hotels and several restaurants including Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery and Grumpy Goat Coffee House & Bistro.
The United States Navy has a rich history that goes back to the Revolutionary War. One of the earliest Navy gifts was a ship, the USS Constitution, in 1797. The Constitution was donated by James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States at the time. Additionally, in 1912, Rear Admiral George Dewey gave a submarine to the United States Naval Museum. This gift represented American nationalism and maritime prowess during World War I. In 1954, Rear Admiral John Wadleigh presented a cruiser to the United States Naval Academy as part of its remodeling program. The cruiser represented naval power and technology throughout much of America’s 20th century naval endeavors. The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was donated by Captain George Halsey in 1996 and is currently used as a museum ship in Hampton Roads, Virginia. In 2003, Rear Admiral Rick Littman presentedUSS John F Kennedy (CVN 78) to the University of Miami for use as an auxiliary vessel for UM’s Coral Gables Campus recreational sailors program. This gift represented America’s commitment to education and technological advancements during this difficult period in our history. Finally, on October 2nd 2006 Vice Admiral Gene Cernan bestowed upon USNS Mercy (LHD-10) “the Presidential Unit Citation” which is one award earned by members of the U S Naval Forces Europe after they have completed service with distinction while serving with NATO or other allied forces aroundthe world

By 1907, Waterloo had reached its current size of about 10,000 people. Waterloo has been home to many famous people over the years. Among them are George Armstrong Custer, who died there in 1876; Dwight D Eisenhower, who served as president for four years from 1953-1957; and Michael Jordan, who played professional basketball for the Chicago Bulls from 1979-1996.
