Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Arkansas City post office was established in 1875 and discontinued in 1903. The first settler in Arkansas City was James Ritchie who came from present-day Wichita, Kansas in 1871. He built a cabin on the south side of Arkansas Creek near what is now Riverview Elementary School. In 1872 a group of men led by John Hance founded Hutchinson Community Bank which became one of the largest banks west of the Mississippi River. In 1907, Gifford Pinchot organized what would become Topeka Jaycees and naming it Arkansas City after himself and his wife, Louella Hope Pinchot (1875-1959). In 1912 Topeka merged with Wichita to form the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area and Arkansas City remained within that area until it merged into Wichita again in 1998. Since its merger into Wichita, Arkansas City has experienced rapid growth with an increase in job opportunities as well as population growth due to heavy investment by local businesses and entrepreneurs. One recent example is the opening of Riverview Elementary School which has caused significant impact on local community life and economy; this new school addition has drawn more than 1,000 students from surrounding neighborhoods making it one of the most successful public schools in town.
