The first school in Dodge City opened in 1903. In 1912, an electric streetlight system was installed in dodge city. Dodge City became an independent city within Kansas on January 1, 1914. On December 8th of that year, World War I began and the city saw its first military engagement when American forces withdrew from Wichita after being soundly defeated there the previous day. On November 5th of 1918, during World War I's second phase (the "Great war"), Cannon Street Bridge collapsed due to weather conditions and traffic tie-ups caused by munitions buildup along the Missouri River Valley; as a result of this bridge collapse Dodge City lost many residents and businesses because transportation was then unavailable between town and surrounding farms or villages. This event is considered one of the worst accidents ever to happen in Kansas History
