In 1881, a group of businessmen formed an organization to provide better transportation for goods coming into and through Dodge City from Waco, Texas. They named their company The Wichita & Oklahoma Railroad Company which became part ofthe Union Pacific Railway System soon after its founding. In 1903, when Wichita became an independent city, The Wichita & Oklahoma Railroad Company merged withthe Wichita Terminal Railway to formthe Wichita Terminal Railway Company Ltd.. However this merger never came to fruition because William Jardine failed to secure funding from other parts ofthe railway system for his new venture In 1907, Dodge City got its own electric light plant called Aladdin's Lamp which led to growth in business around that time due to advancements in technology In 1912, when Kansas State University was founded adjacent to downtown by Governor James Beasley as part of Lawrence Agricultural College (later Kansas State University), dodge CITY lost its status as county seat and within Dodge County only came under government jurisdiction with passage of law giving cities such as Topeka and Shawnee their own governing bodies . On July 1st 1917 – just over one hundred years ago today – Mayor Charles A Baughman announced plans for creationof a Municipal Airport at present day Elmira Municipal Airport Race Street amid concerns about inadequate facilities available therefor . This airport would become one of America's first commercial airports .
