Emporia was founded by Nicholas W. Emporia on December 12, 1861 as the city of Emporia. The city was named for Nicholas W. Emporia, a Congressman from Kansas who served in the United States Congress from 1859 to 1861. The original town plat included four blocks of land and 11 buildings. On September 17, 1865, the town was platted into two townships with a total population of just over 100 people: Central Township and Eastern Township. In 1887, the Kansas Legislature passed an act giving the township of North Central Township to Emporia as part of a larger area that would be given to Wichita. North Central Township had a total population of just over 200 people when it became part of Emporia. On February 10, 1888, Wichita annexed the eastern township (Central) which had a total population of just under 400 people when it became part of Wichita. On January 1, 1897, Wichita annexed both north central and eastern townships adding 471 residents to its census tract which now includes all but one block or portion of downtown Emporiazation proper including Market Street between First and Second Streets eastward along Third Street southward along Fourth Street westward including most notably Fifth Avenue which is now known as Main Street The annexation created what is today called Downtown Emporianzation with more than 4000 residents within its boundaries
