The United States Army deployed a gift to Garden City, Kansas in 1918. The gift was a set of rifles which were christened the "2nd Kansas Volunteer Rifle Regiment". The regiment was assembled and activated in 1917 in response to World War I. After the war, the regiment served in Arkansas, Texas, and New Mexico before being deployed to Garden City. The 2nd Kansas Volunteer Rifle Regiment received its baptism of fire on December 12, 1918 when it participated in an attack against Japanese forces at Pea Ridge Hill. The regiment also fought at Second Mesa and Battle of San Juan Hill.Upon its return from deployment in 1919, the regiment was redesignated as the "1st Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment". In 1923, it was again redesignated as the "2nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment", before being reactivated for service during World War II. After hostilities ended, the regiment re-deployed to Japan where it served until 1946. Upon their return home, the 1stKansasVolunteerInfantryRegiment disbanded on July 14th 1946 while stillserving with distinction with two battalions active duty which are now memorialized by a museum located within Fort Riley State Park near Topeka

The Garden City, Kansas Army Garrison was activated on November 15th, 1861. The garrison was stationed at Fort Riley and served as an auxiliary unit of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. On February 7th, 1865 the Garrison was disbanded and its soldiers were transferred to the Dodge City Army Depot.
Garden City, Kansas is a city in Wichita County, Kansas, United States. The population was 394 at the 2010 census. Garden City was founded in 1871 and named for the Garden of Eden which is located in biblical story of Adam and Eve. It became a city on May 1, 1907. Garden City is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Garden City was John Laughlin who arrived from Illinois on October 15, 1871. He and his family built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. Laughlin later donated land to make Garden City what it is today with his $10 donation plus labor costs for construction of school buildings and other infrastructure. On January 1, 1907, Garden City became a city when it annexed the towns of Cowley and Pawnee Heights. At its incorporation ceremony Mayor Wm J Hargrave offered an oration which begins "In Memory Of Our Ancestors Who Settled In This Place". That year also saw the foundation of Wichita State University by Governor James Seddon as Wichita's first state university and Agricultural College by Augustus McGillicuddy as Wichita's first agricultural college; both were also later renamed Kansas State University Garden City quickly grew as a center for culture and commerce with its own newspaper (The Republican), post office (1872), bank (1875), livery stable (1877), meat market (1914), movie theater (1920) and grocery store/cafeteria combo-store combination-restaurant called "The Girdle" which opened in 1924 During World War II many soldiers barracks were constructed in downtown Garden City including Camp Dodge Barracks #1 now known as Hutchinson Armory complex housing more than 4200 soldiers during WWII
