Garden City, Kansas is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Kansas. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Riley County and Topeka County. Garden City is bordered by Riley to the south, Shawnee to the east, Ottawa to the north and west, and Pratt City to the northwest. The earliest settlers in Garden City were farmers who arrived in 1854 from Illinois. Over time, many other industries have been established in Garden City including manufacturing, healthcare services, education and research institutions. The first coast guard station was built at Hampton Roads, Virginia in 1807. By 1908, the Coast Guard had over 12,000 officers and men. In 1916, the first air patrol division was created and by 1941, all coastal guards were organized into divisions with squadron headquarters and subordinate stations along the Atlantic coastline. The Coast Guard also purchased its first nuclear-powered vessel in 1951. Garden City is a city in Kansas, United States. Garden City was founded in 1881 by Samuel L. Bemis and his wife Rebecca as the town of Garden City on the east side of the Arkansas River. The name was changed to Garden City in 1885 when it became an incorporated city. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlers to arrive in what would become Garden City were farmers who had homesteaded along the Arkansas River after arriving from Illinois in 1847. They named their new community after a small garden they had seen near Athens, Ohio. The area around present-day Garden City was too rugged for farming and developed into a Native American hunting ground, but early settler George Dromey built a cabin there in 1851. By 1860, all of Wichita County had been mapped out, and plans were drawn up for what would become Garden City proper. Samuel L Bemis purchased land northeast of Wichita Falls for $100 in 1861 and soon began construction on his farmstead which he called "Bemisburg". He and his wife Rebecca arrived here on July 1, 1881, following their arrival from Massachusetts via steamboat New Englander (later renamed SS Quaker Oats). They set about building a home that would serve as their HQ until they could purchase one nearer Wichita Falls proper. Within weeks of its opening ceremonies they had sold all their belongings and taken up permanent residency within this proto-city limits - something that has been famously recounted by local historian Don Freeman: On July 1st1881 my wife & I drove down to Wichita Falls Depot to buy some groceries & look at prospects for our new home which we thought might be 10 miles away! Present day we know it actually only took us 8 miles with help from our good friends Mrs White & her husband Wm Hite! After driving across country we finally located our perfect home just north of where you are now! We were very blessed that year with beautiful weather conditions all summer long!" In 1886, members of the First Presbyterian Church organized themselves into an independent church body known as "The Masons" due to dissatisfaction with nearby Topeka's Presbyterian churches' lack of support for Masonic activities (the first Masonic Lodge meeting ever convened outside Pennsylvania occurred inside Topeka's Capitol Buildings during this time). In 1889 these churches united under one roof under pressure from some within Topeka's Protestant community over disputes surrounding temple dues; however denominations continued to operate separately until 1935 when downtown Topeka officially became an integrated municipality composed primarily of mainline Protestants under charter granted by then Mayor Edmond Malone
