The coffee industry in Garden City, Kansas has been around for over 60 years. The first coffee shop in Garden City was opened by Dutch immigrants on the corner of Third and Haskell Streets in 1922. Today, there are more than 20 coffee shops in Garden City alone. Coffee marketing started early in Garden City's history. In 1916, a woman by the name of Mrs. Haines started selling baked goods from her home on Fourth Street. One year later, she opened a grocery store with her husband John Haines on Main Street. Over time, Mrs. Haines' business grew to be one of the most successful in town. In 1926, she opened an ice cream parlor on First Avenue called "Hains Creamery." This location would become one of the most popular tourist destinations in town until it closed its doors in 1978 due to financial problems. In 1938, two businessmen named Harry and Donald Schaefer purchased Mrs. Haines' grocery store and renamed it "Harry's Coffee Shop." It is interesting to note that this first Harry's Coffee Shop is still functioning today as a local favorite spot for breakfast or lunch! During World War II, Harry's Coffee Shop served as a military supply depot and also became known for their delicious wartime cookies! In 1951, Mr. and Mrs.(now Ms.) Ann Bickleman bought Harry's Coffee Shop and reopened it as "Ann & Bill's". It was here that Ann & Bill began serving up some of the best cupof Joe ever made! Their continuous success led them eventually to open their own restaurant - Ann & Bill’s Café - which still stands today (2004). "The original Starbucks", as Starbucks now refers to themselves (in 2000), were founded by American expatriate Stefan Kulas back at Ann & Bill’s Café when he hit his peak professionally as an espresso barista with then-Seattle-based Seattle Business Journal (SBJ). Kulas met his future wife Rebecca Green at SBJ where she worked nights shift; they married soon after at what would become Starbucks’ first corporate headquarters – 4th Avenue South – before starting their own café downtown just north of Main Street."

The first Europeans to enter what is now Garden City were French traders in 1819. They named the post "Fort de la Grange" and began trading with Native Americans. In 1828, Ulysses S. Grant located and laid out Garden City on land he had purchased from the syllabian tribe of Wichita Indians. He renamed it after his home state of Illinois, which he had visited while on an official visit to that state in 1827-28. On October 15, 1857, during the American Civil War (the war for independence), General James Kansa attacked and destroyed Fort de la Grange; as a result of this attack Garden City became Union territory and was not returned to Kansas until 1861 when it was re-annexed by that state as part of Lawrence County.
In 1897–98 Mr. Wylie erected a fine new cotton gin on the creek near today's high school for processing local cottonseed oil crops into yarns for export to England and other parts of Europe; this center became known as Wylie's Cotton Millinery Museum (now known as Old Main State University). That same year also saw enactment of the Kansas Act No., 1001 ("An act to establish agricultural schools within this State"); these Agricultural Schools were designed primarily to provide training for farmers in horticulture and related subjects so they could produce food for their own families and sell it indirectly to city dwellers through local market gardens or directly through store shelves where it would be sold under various names such as "Tomato Juice", "Garden Seed", etc.; one example being "Kansas State University Extension Service".
In 1907–08 George Noyes improved drainage ditches around present-day town limits; these ditches became known locally as Noyes' Ditches because he built them primarily for irrigation purposes rather than defense against flooding by nearby rivers which sometimes overflowed their banks during heavy rains.
Noyes died suddenly in 1916 while serving with World War I military forces in France; however, hisimproved drainage system benefited many residents long after his death because severe floods from nearby rivers still occur occasionally even today due mainly to bad weather conditions having nothing whatsoever do with him!

Garden City, Kansas was founded in 1867 by James Buchanan and is the oldest city in the state of Kansas. The city was named after Garden City, England which was the first European settlement in what is now Kansas. The original settlers were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. In 1870 the population of Garden City was 1,500 and it grew to 5,000 by 1881. The city became a railway center with its own line running through it. The growth of the city led to increased development and an expanding infrastructure that included a water supply, schools, businesses and residences. By 1907 the population of Garden City had reached 15,000 people and it peaked at 20,000 in 1930. However during World War II garden City experienced significant decline due to military recruitment requirements for service in Europe. After 1945 the town slowly regained its former vitality as a farming community with a focus on agriculture until 2000 when it became an area known for its nightlife experiences due to changes within Wichita jurisdiction laws prohibiting late night drinking
In 1881, Garden City was founded as the capital of the new Kansas Territory. It became a city in 1907, and in 1925 it merged with Topeka to form the current metropolitan area.
