The Garden City Marina is a maritime history museum located in Garden City, Kansas. The museum opened in 1984 and features exhibits on the history of the ports of Garden City and Wichita. The Museum also has a donationfleet which offers displays on donated vessels from around the world. Garden City was first settled by Americans in 1854 as a result of land grants from the Mexican government. The city's first post office was established in 1855, and it served as the center for education and trade until 1870 when Wichita took over that role. By 1900, Garden City had developed into one of the largest inland cities in Kansas with a population of about 45,000 people. It became an industrial center during this time with companies such as Armour Manufacturing Company, Dodge & Wheeler Manufacturing Company, American Canning Co., Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and several others locating here. In World War I, Garden City played an important role in supporting both America and Great Britain by providing munitions supplies to both sides. After the war ended, local businesses transitioned to other industries such as agriculture or service sector endeavors like trucking or manufacturing. However, since its inception as a port town—a designation given to it because of its location at the mouth of Kanawha River—Garden City has remained an important seaport for commerce and culture within Kansas and beyond. In 1984, after more than 50 years of continuous operation at its current site near downtown Garden City—making it one of only two museums open to visitors inside Kansas’s state capital—theMarine History Museum opened its doors to visitors from all over the world who come to learn about maritime history within our state’s borders along with those from neighboring Oklahoma and Missouri.
