Garden City, Kansas is a small city in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the border of Sedgwick and Jackson counties. The population was 7,836 at the 2010 census. Garden City is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by Reuben Park and others as a service station for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. It grew rapidly around World War II when Boeing built its first aircraft plant there, followed by other businesses and homes until the city's limits were reduced to just east of Interstate 670 in 2000. Today, Garden City is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions including art galleries, theaters, restaurants and nightlife; as well as successful public schools that have attracted international students such as Oxford University and Brown University. The downtown business district has been renovated with new shopping malls, office buildings and hotels; while much of rural acreage remains undeveloped for housing or industry.
