As the Garden City Rifle and Pistol Club has grown in membership over the years, so too has their gift giving habit. Garden City is a city in the US state of Kansas. It was founded in 1867 by James A. Garfield, who also founded what is now the University ofKansas at Garden City. The population was 20,715 as of the 2010 census. Garland's original plan for Garden City called for an "open town" pattern with large blocks of single-family homes built on dirt and gravel roads near a busy commercial district. However, funding issues and other problems dogged the development from its early years, and only a small number of homes were actually built. In 1916, the city received its charter from the Kansas General Assembly, but it wasn't until 1922 that it became an incorporated municipality with full voting rights. During World War II, Garden City served as one of over 100 military camps used by the United States Army stationed in Canada and Mexico. The city also hosted a summer camp for American children during this time period The economic recession that hit Garden City following World War II caused many people to leave or move away; however, there has been significant redevelopment over the years which has increased employment and infrastructure needs within Garden City while preserving much of its historical character In recent decades, Garden City has become known as a tourist destination due to its array of traditional arts festivals such as the Wichita Folk Festival and JapanFest . Garden City is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 7,907 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sedgwick County. Garden City was founded in 1871 by George P. Allen and named for his nursery business, Garden City Nursery Company. Garden City was platted on April 12, 1871, by George P.Allen and others under the name of "Townships 14 and 15". The first post office in Garden City was open on July 10, 1870. On November 1, 1872 the town became a city after its incorporation by vote of the people. The original downtown core remained largely unchanged until the late 20th century as residential development expanded rapidly around it; today much of that older core remains commercial/residential district known as "The Loop." In 1907 Lennie Wiggs organized a group of businessmen to promote agricultural production in Sedgwick County and they organized what would become Wichita State University (Wichita State Teachers College). Wichita State University opened its doors on October 1st 1909 with twelve students attending classes in a small building located on what is now Main Street near present-day Eisenhower Boulevard - an event which has been commemorated annually ever since with an event called Wichita State's Open Day
The Garden City community was founded in 1871 when a group of farmers and businessmen decided to move from Topeka, Kansas, to a new location that would be more accessible to the growing population. The original town hall was located on Market Street and the first school was built on Main Street. The city's first mayor, James Bonham, was elected in 1872. Garden City grew rapidly and soon had a library, post office, fire department, two hospitals (the Park Hospital and the Methodist Hospital), three churches (Anglican, Lutheran, Presbyterian) and over 100 businesses. In 1886 the city voted to annex adjacent land which led to the founding of Wichita.
