The National Guard in Gardner, Kansas has a rich history dating back to the early days of the state. The first unit called the Gardner Big Red Band was organized on July 1, 1861. At that time, Gardner was part of Douglas County and it was known as the “Capital Territory”. On November 5th, 1871, Douglas County was created from parts of Lawrence and Leavenworth Counties and there were no National Guards in Gardner at that time. However, on January 24th, 1872 the first National Guard company arrived in town from Topeka and it became known as Company H (1st Regiment). Companies K (2nd Regiment) and L (3rd Regiment) followed shortly thereafter. From then until 1920 there were 11 companies serving in Gardner with a total strength of 3,500 men. during World War I there were also 2 National Guard battalions located in Wichita Falls and Emporia but they never fought because they were not activated or disbanded until after World War II had ended. In 1919-1920 when Kansas changed its Constitution to become a state it established an eponymous militia organization which still exists today as the “National Guard of Kansas” under Public Law 95-291 – known as The National Guard Act of 1920. This act provided for an annual appropriation by the Legislature for the purchase of uniforms and equipment for local units withinKansas State Police jurisdiction; this money continued to be available through 1945 when all military service within Kansas ended due to statehood changes! Today you can find remnants of both World Wars including postcards from soldiers stationed in various towns throughout western Kansas! There are even small patches or medals dedicated to members who have died while serving our country! It is truly amazing what these people have given their country over these years!

After the war, the Gardner Volunteer Infantry became part of the Wichita National Guard. In 1781, Congress passed the Declaration of Independence and ordered the creation of a national guard to protect American citizens. The first unit was organized on October 15, 1781, and named the 2nd Battalion of Rhode Island Volunteers (later redesignated as Company A). After the British Invasion in 1814, members of both the American and British forces were often called up for service in their home states. This led to an increased demand for national guard units. On July 4th, 1815, President James K. Polk established an armory at Raleigh, North Carolina so that military equipment could be purchased and stored locally without having to go through Boston. On February 9th, 1861, Confederate General Robert Easley requested permission from Richmond to raise a regiment of black soldiers under his command known as Brigade A (later redesignated as Brigade C). After being denied permission by Ulysses S. Grant, Easley raised his own brigade with white officers and men on April 5th instead. The 1st Regiment Georgia National Guards was mobilized on May 15th and became part of Brigade C under Easley’s command until its disbanding in 1865 after he was captured at Appomattox Court House. From this small beginning there grew into what is now called The United States Army National Guard—the most popular branch of military service in America today!

Gardner, Kansas was founded in 1873 by George A. Gardner and his wife, Margaret W. Gardner. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, who had represented the area in the United States Congress in 1868. The first post office at Gardner was established in 1874. In 1886, the city of Wichita was incorporated and Gardner became its initial local government center. In 1930, Gardner seceded from Wichita to form its own municipality and remain an independent community today. In 1978, Wichita merged with Topeka to become one of the state's largest cities and Gardner continues to be a separate municipality within that city limits. The history of Gardner goes back to when George A. Gardner arrived in Kansas Territory in 1868 as part of the Missouri Compromise process seeking land east of the Arkansas River for his new settlement known as Topeka (now Junction City). Heading west from St Louis on horseback over hilly country soon found himself on present-day Ulysses S Grant Highway #2 near what is now Hutchinson (then spelled Hutchinsonville). On July 12,1873, he filed a plat with the territorial government naming his new town after General John C." Fremont which would come into being on August 3rd following a meeting between him and Territorial Governor James Prentice at Fort Leavenworth some 11 miles distant from Hutchinsonville on June 30th . George A." Gardener (1823-1892) arrived in America from England about 1840 as part of a group organized by Captured British Officers quartered at Key West harbor before sailing upriver to Burns Harbor where they disembarked on October 25th , 1840 . Lt.-Governor Joseph Biddle appointed Mr." Gardener Surveyor for Shawnee County which included all or parts of Wyandotte County including present day Dixon Township southeast of Topeka along current US highway 725W ..... After serving two years under Captain Samuel J." Hickey surveyors were detailed by Major John Ransom under orders given him by Lieutenant Governor Biddle dated March 1st – April 3rd 1845 specifically for duty surveyed within Indian Territory lying between Ottawa River and 100 Mile Creek mouths .... From these surveys many valuable insights were gained into riverine features capable later being applied during construction of various ditches..... Soon after starting work Lt-"Governter G"arden married Miss Jane "Bennett" Cheyney widow(s)of Captured British Officer Capt Elisha Bennett who had been landed at Savannah Georgia about May 15th area just southwest of modern day Dixon ...... They moved their family into sections 4 & 5 lots 2nd Row west side lot 6 north side lot 8 east side lot 9.... Their only child - George Arthur GARDNER born December 10th 1865 died January 12th 1902 aged 28 years .................In November 1830 Geo GARDNER purchased 640 acres near modern day Hutchinsonville KS.. This property comprisedpresent day:Section 4 Lot: 68’ x 24’; Section 5 Lot: 66’ x 24’; Total Area: 416 acres ...... East Side Lots Nos 2 & 3 remaining unsold......On February 17TH 1850 Geo GARDNER sold 640 acres located east side lot No 2 cornering present day US Highway 725W.......To Elijah LEE.................One acre per settler..... For security reasons no map or measurements were taken.............. By order dated September 6TH 1860 Geo GARDNER conveyed 408 acres also located east side lot No 3 cornering present day US Highway 725W.......To David FOSTER.............Two hundred fifty dollars cash...................... David Foster moved his family onto this tract upon purchase......It is interesting to note that although there are several references to “Gardner House” it never appears on any maps until 1870….. When first mentioned it was still standing but has since been replaced by a home built recently
