Great Bend is a town in Dodge County, Kansas, United States. The population was 706 at the 2010 census. Great Bend is part of the Topeka, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The first permanent settler in what is now Great Bend was James Wightman, who arrived in 1854. He built a log cabin on the east side of the river and named it "Wightman's Landing." Great Bend was founded by settlers in 1881 and named for General George Armstrong Custer. The first post office in Great Bend was established on July 26, 1881, and opened under the name of "Greenville". It changed its name to "Great Bend" on December 1, 1881. The first store in town was opened by Lula Potter on November 12, 1886. At that time it consisted of a single room with a dirt floor and a corrugated iron roof. In 1889 the first school was built; it used an old log cabin as its building. In 1898 the first wireless transmission took place from Great Bend to Topeka; it resulted in great interest in radio and television among residents of Great Bend. In 1906 Great Bend had 5 churches: Baptist (1892), Methodist (1897), Catholic (1901), Presbyterian (1903), Lutheran (1907)
