Great Bend is a small town in Cloud County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Great Bend is located on the Arkansas River. The first settler in what is now Great Bend was Levi Hinton in 1847. A post office was established here in 1853 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, J.T. Weems opened a flour mill here which became one of the largest flour mills west of the Missouri River. Weems & Co., a large general store and grain elevator, was founded by J.T.'s brother-in-law George Cramer in 1911 and continued to be active into the 21st century. In 1916, Wm Fenton built a two-story frame school building for $4,000 which remains standing today as Great Bend High School (now portions of Mapleton Elementary School). In 1927, Pueblo School District No. 2 purchased Great Bend from Weems & Co., setting off an era of consolidation within Cloud County's schools that continues to this day. Great Bend, Kansas is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita area. The first settler in Great Bend was Jacob Hardesty on November 15, 1868. He and his family built a cabin near the present day intersection of U.S. 67 and K-8 road. In 1870, John Hardesty settled in Great Bend and opened a general store that later became the First National Bank of Great Bend. On January 8, 1871, Jnos Nolen Stephens founded the New Hope Baptist Church in Great Bend with twelve members; he served as pastor until his death in 1896. In 1912, Lillie Mapes sold her farm to Harry Sibley for $1 million dollars which established what is now known as Sibley Park in Great Bend. The land around Sibley Park was donated by Harry Sibley to make an open space for public use within 100 feet of each house on his property where people could picnic and enjoy views from their homes or drive out onto the parkland for fishing or hiking purposes.—Jack Dempsey
