Junction City is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Junction City was founded in 1857 by settlers from Illinois and Ohio who crossed the Kansas River to escape religious persecution. The town was originally named "New Liberty" after American Revolutionary War hero George Washington's new capital in Philadelphia. However, local residents objected to the name change and it reverted to Junction City on February 14, 1907. The town has been located on the same site since its founding and retains that name today. In 1857, about 25 pioneer families from Illinois and Ohio arrived in what is now Johnson County for the purpose of developing new land south of the Platte River – an area then containing only a few scattered Sioux Nation villages. Pioneer John Sneath decided to found Junction City on March 6, 1857 – one day before Kansas statehood – because he felt that existing Indian villages were harassing his pioneers’ crops and livestock while they awaited additional supplies from England or other traveling merchants. The first post office opened in Junction City on May 10, 1857; it operated under the name "New Liberty". In 1862, when Kansas Territory was created from parts of Missouri and Texas, NewLiberty became an unincorporated community within that territory under territorial jurisdiction; however, it continued To operate as a separate village until 1861 when it merged with neighboring Palestine to form Palestine Township (later Junction City). A meetinghouse built in 1865 served as both churches for Palestinian Township residents as well as local schoolchildren until 1966 when instruction moved into a new building erected adjacent to First Baptist Church (later Parkview Baptist Church) which had been donated by Mrs. Ethel Whitehead along with $500 cash plus 4 acres of lot after her husband Fenton Whitehead died in 1925 due to heart disease at age 73 years old).
