The Lawrence, Kansas Army National Guard was activated on October 1, 1898. The unit was originally organized as the 2nd Infantry Regiment and designated as Company A of the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. On February 17, 1899, the brigade was redesignated as the 5th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and redesignated again on November 1, 1899 as Company C of the 4th Infantry Division. On December 12, 1903, the division was redesignated as the 8th Infantry Division and in 1907 it became a regiment consisting of two battalions each. The regiment disbanded on July 15, 1912 due to World War I service exemption. On July 15, 1912, with World War I serving exemption from military service requirements in Kansas Territory until June 30 of that year by order of Governor James Middletowns (Republican), elements of the 9th Cavalry Regiment left for France and were not returned until September 10 after being mobilized at Lawrence Municipal Airport under Lieutenant Colonel H.C. "Hap" Arnold's command on September 6 together with other units which had also been exempt from service: Company K (9th Dragoons) from Topeka; Company G (4th Texas Mounted Rifles) from Wichita Falls; Company D (3rd Kansas Light Artillery) from Overbrook; Platoon E (2nd Battalion/5th Hussars) from Topeka; Machine Gun Squadron One (MG Squadron One/39ers) attached to Replacement Battery No. 108 at Fort Riley south side of city limits; Ammunition Train No.7 arrived at Lawrence Municipal AirportSeptember 10 After mobilization there were several problems with equipment being brought in especially artillery pieces since they were not approved for shipment overseas according to regulations then in effect so Colonel Arnold put his own men onto horses pulled buggies to take them where they needed to go instead One problem that quickly arises is officers who are ordered into combat or have their orders changed often do not live up to their promise and leave soon afterwards either through death or retirement when called back into duty In 1916 an addition company F(5th Cavalry Regiment)/6TH Mountain Artillery arrived also becoming part of 7TH Ammunition Train which continued working along side 7AAMT until 1918 when both companies merged becoming one battalion again led by Majors John Witherspoon and Newton Sayers By 1919 across all Divisions most regiments had been disbanded although some still existed including COMPANY C-8TH INDIANAPOLIS INFANTRY DIVISION which served during WWII Army National Guard units authorized for Overseas Service did serve during WWII but never completed deployment

It lies along the border of Missouri andKansas on the Arkansas River. Lawrence was founded by Mormons in 1855 as an agricultural center on the bluffs overlooking the Arkansas River. The town grew rapidly during World War II as railroads brought goods and people to and from munitions plants in neighboring Kansas City. When Interstate 35 was built through Lawrence in 1926, it cut off most access to downtown by way of streets that ran east-west but were now north-south gridlocked with cars parked everywhere. A plan to widen I-35 and build bypasses around Lawrence were abandoned when Congress passed a law preventing local governments from building roads without express legislation from Washington. In 1988, Lawrence became one of five cities within Kansas City metropolitan area which received city funding for public transportation; this program continues today. The economy of Lawrence has changed dramatically since its incorporation into KCMO; after all, KCMO is one of America's leading technology cities and home to some of America's largest tech companies such as Microsoft, Intel, Symantec, Dell and ATI Technologies among others - these companies have given rise to many high-tech startups over the years (see List below). However, some large employers still remain in central/downtown areas like KFC (which employs over 1,000 people) or HP Pavilion (which employs over 1,500 people)."
