The Leawood National Guard Museum in Leawood, Kansas, is home to the earliest national guard unit in Kansas. The unit was organized on November 9, 1861 under the command of Captain John A. Nichols and First Lieutenant George W. Smith. The first duty of the battalion was to protect Fort Hays from a possible attack by Confederate forces. In 1865, the unit disbanded due to lack of volunteers and equipment. However, it reformed on October 10th under the command of Captain Augustus Bancroft and First Lieutenant James Sayers. The battalion served for two years as part of the 1st Brigade in the 2nd Division Army Corps before disbanding on December 12th 1865. Leawood is a small town located in Kansas, United States. The population was 1,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Leawood is bordered by Ness City to the south and east, Overland Park to the north, and Geary County to the west. The first European settlers in what is now Leawood were Germans who arrived in 1849. They named their community after an early settler, Lewis Wofford Leawood. After a few years, they abandoned the town because of its lack of water and other problems. In 1865, a group of Anglo-Saxon pioneers from Michigan settled on land that would become part of LeawOOD. These pioneers were known as "the Normans." They founded a farm called Normandale which eventually became one of Kansas's largest cotton plantations. In 1904, however, Normandale was sold to Standard Oil and its employees moved out; it was subsequently demolished in 1957 for use as an oil refinery redevelopment project known as the Normandale Site (now Prairie View A&M University). After World War II ended, many farmers from eastern Kansas migrated to LeawOOD due to new opportunities for farming following statehood in this region. This migration created many businesses and industries in what is nowLeawOOD such as food processing plants (such as Hormel Foods), plastics manufacturing (including Litton Industries), agricultural production (including soybean crops) and healthcare services (such as American Medical Center). This growth has had positive impacts on local economies both inside and outsideLeawOOD with more people coming into town each year since 2000 than leaving it – making it one of Kiowa County's fastest-growing communities over that time period.

Leawood, Kansas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Kansas and one of the smallest cities in the United States by population size. Leawood is also home to two universities - Wichita State University and Shawnee State University - as well as four high schools: Central High School, Frazier High School, Lenexa East High School, and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Girls Academy. The first settlement in what is now Leawood was made on April 15, 1867 when Levi Woodbury established a cabin on a knoll overlooking trade routes between Topeka and Wichita Falls. In 1872, Leawood had its first school which taught children from 3rd to 8th grades; however it closed in 1875 due to lack of funding. A new school building was erected in 1903 but this too closed after only 9 months due to financial difficulties caused by World War I. In 1916, an ad appeared in The Evening Telegram newspaper offering $5 for every night that someone could be found sleeping outdoors during winter time without getting sick or wet; this led to the formation of the “sleeping rough” movement which aimed to improve conditions for homeless people living on the streets or inside abandoned buildings throughout Leawood and nearby towns such as Englewood and Blue Grass Junction. In 1933-1934, City Councilman William Bogan created plans for what would become known as Plaza Drive; this would connect Main Street with several other streets leading into downtown Leawood through a parkland area that still exists today near Interstate 70 eastbound exit #2A (Plaza). This project failed because insufficient money was raised to cover costs associated with creating a parkland area large enough to accommodate an outdoor mall; instead Plaza Drive became just another name for downtown Business Park which opened in 1936 adjacent to Municipal Hall south of Main Street. City Councilman Harry Cook submitted plans for what would become known as GardenWalk which included expanding Plaza Drive into what is now North Front Street; this project met with similar opposition from business owners who argued that such an expansion would create too much traffic congestion within their businesses along Withrow Avenue which ran perpendicular to GardenWalk; however Cook prevailed over his opponents and GardenWalk became reality when it was approved by City Council on November 25, 1941. During World War II many residents left town due to military service but those who remained formed tight-knit communities characterized by their shared love of family members unable all leave home at once during wartime while others struggled financially postwardue largely to inflation rates throughout America%. Many residents took up gardening as a hobby or pursued other activities such as taking care of animals or working odd jobsrelated especially around 1946 when Wichita State University moved into its own campus west of downtownLeawodoungerritories were gradually sold off until 1990when district office space became available at Quarry Park southeast of downtownLeawo
