Since then, local residents have continued to give marine gifts throughout the year in special occasions such as boat races or spider feeding contests. Liberal, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of Liberal was 96% white and 3% black. Liberal was founded in 1867 as a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first post office was established in Liberal in 1870. In 1875, Liberal became part of Sedgwick County and incorporated as a village. In 1902, Liberal amalgamated with other villages within Sedgwick County to form the present-day town of Liberal. The first store in Liberal opened on December 21, 1892 by Wm H Goudreau and His Son George Goudreau. William H Goudreau operated this store until his death on February 25, 1907. His son George continued operations until he closed it on May 14, 1910; however, it reopened two days later under the new name "Goudreau's Store." In 1916 Republican Fred Matson ran for Congress against incumbent James Byrnes and won; however, he did not serve in office because he had been impeached two months earlier for perjury after denying knowledge that White Sands Proving Ground had been used to test nuclear weapons during World War I. Byrnes again won an election in 1922 against Democrat John Fenton with almost 60% of the vote; however, due to term limits set by US President Warren Harding he could not serve another full term and resigned from Congress effective January 3rd 1923 when his term expired without having served its full term (he would have met all requirements but actually serving time). Matson then moved to California where he died at age 92 on October 2nd 1966 before ever having returned to live in Liberty Township again
Liberal was a city in Kansas, located on the banks of the Missouri River. It was founded by James S. Polk in 1854 as a branch of Topeka and it became a separate city in 1907. The name is derived from the Liberal Party which helped to bring about the American Civil War.
