Merriam, Kansas is a town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settler in Merriam was John and Nancy Willis on November 3, 1876. They purchased of land from the Osage Nation. The town was platted on February 18, 1881 by George Fenton and his son-in-law Wm. Pritchard under the name of "Willis". The first post office in Merriam was established on April 12, 1881; it served as an annex to Topeka. The present town site was laid out by James Gentry and patented on November 6, 1886 to Eli Davenport for . He donated of land east of the railroad tracks that became known as Gentry Rancho Seco (now Meridian). According to the United States Census Bureau's 2006 estimate, there were 1,834 people residing in Merriam when it incorporated as a town; however this number has since grown to 2,048 due to annexation of other towns withinDouglas County through2010.
