Merriam, Kansas is a town in Butler County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The community was named for Merriam College. Merriam was founded in 1885 as a small post office called Hanover by Leland and Nettie Morse. It was renamed to Merriam in 1888 after John Mercer, an early settler. In 1902 the post office was moved to its present location and the name changed again to Merriam in 1907 when it became part of Butler County. The first school in Merriam came about 1887 when Lydia Cook set up a one-room school on Hennepin Creek east of what is now Main Street. A larger school building soon appeared on courthouse square and other buildings were added over time including a high school which opened in 1916. In 1951 the high school closed due to lack of students and since then there has been only one middle or elementary School located here (Merriman Elementary). In addition to education, agricultural production has always been an important element of life here with many businesses existing within the town limits such as grain elevators, meatpacking plants, dairy farms and more recently ranching operations as well as lodging areas for tourists during summertime tourism seasons such as vacations or business trips near Wichita Falls or Topeka

Merriam, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of Overland Park, KS. The Merriam community was founded in 1871 by Horace and Lucy Merriam as a farming village on the edge of what is now downtown Overland Park. In 1896, the company town name was changed to honor then-Senator George Wickersham (D–MA), who had donated land for the new town. The town became an incorporated city in 1907.Today's downtown area includes two blocks of Main Street between Plaza Avenue and State Boulevard and four blocks east of Interstate 435, north of I-435's expressway terminus at exits 24 and 25. Commerce Street east of Main runs parallel to I-435 from its western end near Westport Square to its eastern end near North Meridian Street; it continues as a commercial strip until it reaches Interstate 435 just before merge with State Boulevard east of that route. As late as 2003, Commerce Street still carried traffic on both sides (northwest side only) along I-435 between National Airport Road and International Drive while direct access to I-435 was available only from southbound Main through exits 24 and 25 on Interstate 435
