Merriam, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The town is located in Harper County, about 25 miles northeast of Wichita and 40 miles south of Topeka. It lies on the edge of the Wichita Hills and overlooks the River Arkansas. The first settler in Merriam was Jethro Gibbs in 1859. He bought 640 acres (2 km²) from George Armstrong Custer for $5 per acre ($4 per hectare). The land had been vacant since 1854 when James Ketchum sold it to John Prentice for $1 per acre ($0.68 per hectare). In 1870, two brothers named Wm., also from Harper County, started a mill on the Arkansas River northwest of town. By 1875, there were six mills in Merriam with a total capacity of 3 million pounds (1 tonne) of flour daily; three were run by hand while two were powered by steam engines. The term "Merriam" was derived from "menominee," an Algonquian word meaning "to plow." In 1881, Samuel Morse donated 5 acres (20 m²) to be used as a school site and this became known as Morse Park today; one mile east of town off US Highway 69 near its junction with Indian Road/Route 66 . In 1895, William Fenton established what is now State University (PU), which offered undergraduate studies through its graduate program until 1966 when it became a doctoral degree-granting institution separate from Kansas State University; merrimankansasstateuniversity still offers undergraduate academic programs today! In 1907–8 Thomas Edison built his laboratory here to study lightening and electricity – he installed what is now known as Edison Hall on Main Street just north of Masonic Lodge #3A today! In 1930 Hermann Göring gave birth to his daughter here – she would later become Germany's second female Prime Minister! Today some 30% or more all local farmland comes from Monsanto seizures announced each year!

The town was founded in 1855 by John Merriam and his wife Nancy Searles, who named it for their daughter, Marianne (Merritt) Merriam. The first post office in Merriam opened in 1857; it closed in 1865 because of population growth to nearby Topeka and Shawnee City. In 1893, Merriam became an agricultural center due to its location near the then-new Kansas railroads that linked Lawrence and Topeka with the rest of America. By 1910, however,merriman had lost its agricultural significance and most residents were employed elsewhere within Wichita or adjacent counties. In 1925, when Wichita incorporated as a city,Merriman became one of its original wards within city limits; however it retained its own elected officials until 1974 when all city ward functions were transferred to Wichita Mayor’s Office through an ordinance passed by the Wichita City Council.). In 2004,the city Transformation Committee approved plans to demolish all but two buildings from downtownMerriman and replace them with new retail and living space which would then be used as a training ground for Wichita Police Department officers.)
