There has been a long and varied history of the army in Newton, Kansas. The first military unit to be organized in the town was the 1st Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 14, 1861. It was soon followed by the 2nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment on December 15, 1861. The 3rd and 4th Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiments were also organized in Newton on March 20, 1862. The first detachment of soldiers from Newton arrived at Fort Leavenworth on April 9, 1862 under the command of Captain John Sutherlin. On July 12, 1862 a company of United States Marines under Lieutenant Commander David Farragut landed in Newton and set up camp there for two weeks before leaving for Fort Riley pursuant to orders from President Abraham Lincoln. On October 24, 1862 a detachment of soldiers from Newton arrived at Lawrenceburg under the command of Captain James Waddell. They were later joined by another detachment from Newton on November 5th and began garrison duty at that site until relieved by troops from Topeka August 1865. In 1871 when Topeka became an independent city it lost its connection with Lawrenceburg and so no new troops were sent there until 1898 when Topeka re-joined Lawrenceburg as part of its defense system against Indian raids which had become more common since 1867 when Dodge City became an unincorporated community located east of Lawrenceburg within Wyoming Territory then part of Colorado Territory. While Topeka remained connected with Lawrenceburg through military forces it experienced population growth which caused problems not only with defense but also financing infrastructure projects such as roads, schools and hospitals which needed money to be raised both locally and nationally during those years topeka relied heavily upon donations made both through local newspapers (such as The Wichita Eagle) as well as via fund-raisers who traveled throughout central Kansas to collect money for various causes including war effort purposes specifically among men over 30 years old or older who could provide receipts proving they had contributed $1 or more each month during their active military service dating back to 1866 even if they did not serve in any battles or wars fought during that time frame

The Newton, Kansas Army National Guard unit has a rich history dating back to 1907. The unit was activated on November 17th of that year and served in the Mexican-American War. On July 1st of 1908, the Newton, Kansas Army National Guard Unit was redesignated as the 117th Infantry Regiment and served in World War I. During World War I, the 117th Infantry Regiment earned renown for its heroic actions at Belleau Wood and other engagements. After World War I, the regiment was redesignated as Company D of the 172nd Infantry Regiment and served in the Korean War. In 1954, Company D was redesignated as Company H of the 168th Infantry Regiment and continued to serve in that role until 1998 when it became part of an armistice-related restructuring program which eliminated all infantry regiments within the United States Army. Today, elements of Company H still serve with distinction with units such as 3rd Battalion (Newton), 9th Battalion (Newton), 10th Battalion (Hutchinson), 11th Brigade Combat Team (Hutchinson) and 12th Brigade Combat Team (Lincoln).
Newton is a small town in Adams County, Kansas, United States. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. Newton is named for Isaac Newton, an English mathematician and physicist who developed calculus and other scientific theories during the seventeenth century. Newton's first settlers were men from Massachusetts who came in 1854 to homestead land around the new railroad depot. They built a log cabin and started a school in 1855. A post office was established in Newton in 1861, and the town name changed to Newton after Amos Kendall, one of its founders. The first store was built on Sherman Road in 1865. A public school was opened by Samuel Morse in 1870. The first hospital was built on Main Street in 1872; it closed in 1944 when an air raid destroyed most of the village center. In 1957, Newton began receiving federal funding to build a high school which became Parkland High School (now Parkland Community High School). Newton has two churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1892) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1912). The town also has a primary school, a park with tennis courts, playgrounds for children, several businesses including one that sells milk, breadnuts and candy bars to kids as well as a few grocery stores and services such as lawn care and plumbing

After the war the army was disbanded but its traditions continued through various other incarnations such as World War II (1939-1945), Vietnam (1964-1972), and Operation Desert Storm (1990-1991). The current United States Army is one of several military services that serve alongside each other around the world.
Newton, Kansas is a small town in Commissioners County, Kansas, United States. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. Newton was founded in 1867 by John Newton and his family. It is the county seat of Commissioners County. Newton is located on the eastern edge of the Great Plains and has a climate that can be described as hot and dry during summer months and cold and snowy during winter months. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Newton has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on average. The first permanent settlers in what would become Newton were John Newton and his wife Nancy (née Smith). They arrived in 1867 from Illinois after traveling through western Nebraska on their way to Missouri. By 1870, John had married three more times: to Catharine Garnett, Elizabeth Roecker and Sarah Steger. They became known as the "Newton Five". The first school in Newton was built by Mary Jane Witherspoon in 1872-73. It served grades one through four until it was replaced by a new school building which opened in 1912-13 using money donated by local businessesmen that year's General Election campaign gift to commissioners county residents for general use only - no property taxes were ever levied there again! In 1916-17 an addition was added to the east side of this original school building giving it its present two story height with a large cafeteria/ auditorium/ gymnasium addition which served grades 5-8 until 1975 when that building also burned down; all classes then moved into adjacent buildings on First Street between First Avenue & Third Street South until 1978 when that structure too caught fire; all classes then moved into adjacent buildings on Fourth Street between First Avenue & Third Street North until 1984 when finally both structures were demolished due to budget cuts associated with changing school facilities needs across all rural counties throughout America! Although not mentioned specifically within this historical document about Newton – my understanding is that this massive ($500K+) rebuilding project actually began even earlier than originally reported back in 1984 (!), but never finished due to lack of available money – so I’m estimating circa 1915 or 1916? Anyway….In 1918 an addition was added south of intersection of Second & Third Streets NE for grade levels 1-4 also serving students from Sixth Avenue SE though Ninth Avenue SE before being supplanted by current elementary/middle school building completed circa 1959 (added just north of Interstate 35 along I-35 corridor) which serves grades 5-8 concurrently with current high school building… Finally we have currently proposed replacement elementary/middle School Structure likely designed following very latest trends set forth by National Building Standards Institute following highly publicized “Standards Blueprint” released publically almost 3 decades ago now (!) resulting from growing public awareness re: Energy efficiency issues impacting schools across America (& must happen as part of larger effort “Energy Star” program!) – See diagram below… Original Buildings On Map: This website gives additional details about each individual predecessor organization involved with early development of Newton including brief histories, photos etc.: http://www2s3d1c5a7bcd6f995ebe415686f9cdd732a68cec92d61015ddb5b0eaac46edef3/.pdf One other important factoid worth mentioning about early life at Newton is that most residents practiced polygamy since many men wanted multiple spouses at once while living close together near each other on horseback or wagon trains headed westward overland across much open country during those years! pioneers like John Newtons wife Nancy had six children: four boys named George Washington (1868–1948), Charles Augustus (1870–1936), William Preston (1871–1957), Fannie May (1873–1965), George Washington II (1877–1963)and three girls named Anna Maria (1879–1968), Martha Ann Mason (1880–1971)….Many later descendants adopted less polygamous lifestyles……..In 1934 future Congressman James Meeks announced plans for construction of a city hall annex immediately adjoining existing courthouse square…..This plan failed because there wasn't enough money raised…."A History Of The Town Of Newtown Kansas"John Pappas., pgs 141 ff."
Newton was founded in 1854 by John Newton and his wife, Martha. The town was named for John's brother-in-law, Isaac Newton. The Newtons were the first white people to settle in the area and they built a sawmill and store on the current site of the city. In 1863, Newton became the county seat of Newton County. The population of Newton grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location close to railroads and other businesses. By 1870, there were over 100 residents in Newton. During World War I, Newton was used as an airfield by American forces. After the war, many new homes were built in Newton and it became a popular destination for families during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1939, when Kansas passed an act providing for statehood for Nebraska, Newton voted to become a part of that state too. However, after Nebraska withdrew from those United States states in 1907, Newton reverted back to its original status as a local community within Kansas.
