The history of artisan coffee in Newton, Kansas can be traced back to 1874 when two German immigrants, Johann Gottlieb Ziegler and Wilhelm Wegener, opened a small grocery store on the corner of Seventh and Market Streets. The couple sold coffee beans and other coffee-related items from their shop until 1914. In that same year, the first commercial espresso machine was installed in Newton. The machine was designed by Luigi Castiglioni and manufactured by Accumulo. It operated on a water bath with an automatic plunger to produce Italian espresso. From 1964 through 1978, Japanese businessman Toshihide Inoue operated a roastery in Newton. At his business, he roastded and packaged various types of coffees for distribution throughout Japan. In 1978, J&R Coffee began operations in Newton as the first retail store specializing in artisan coffee products outside of Europe or North America.
