The National Guard of Newton, Kansas was first organized on November 15, 1907. The guard's initial purpose was to provide law and order in the small town during times of national emergency. The Guards began their march into history on October 1, 1908 when they were called up to help with a local agricultural strike. From then until 1912, the Guard served as a part-time militia unit that helped protect citizens from criminals and other threats. In 1912, the National Guard was mobilized for World War I and served in France and Belgium. In 1919, Newton became an independent city and the Guards were disbanded. However, they were re-formed in 1925 as a part-time force that helped keep order at local fairs and other public events. On July 5th of this year, the Newton National Guard Forever Honor Roll was established in memory of all members who have Serveed with distinction since 1907.

Newton is a small town in Cass County, Kansas, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. Newton is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson metropolitan area. Newton was founded by John Newton in 1849. Newton is named after one of Scotland's most famous scientists and philosophers, Isaac Newton. In 1849, John Newton settled in what is now known as Newton on the Wichita River near present-day Hutchinson. He operated a store and post office there until his death in 1862. His son, James A., continued the business until his death in 1909. John Newtons grandson, William Fenton Newton (1863-1942), also became a successful businessman and rancher in nearby Pawnee City before moving to Wichita to open an oil refinery and petrochemical plant there in 1921. That same year, he married local girl Alice Ewing and moved to Newton to take over the family business from his wife's father-in-law Harry Kempner (1868-1938). In 1951, William Fenton Newtons grandson Donny WIlliams took over the company from his father; Donny remains its owner today. The townsite of Newton was laid out by George Armstrong Custer during Indian Wars days when buffalo were common on what is now Cass County property east of present day Hutchinson. The first settler west of the Arkansas River (present day Wichita) was James A.(Newton) who built a log cabin on Hennepin Creek north of present day Hutchinson on July 20th 1851 while cattle were being driven down that stream for hides and meat which they would then trade with Indians along with goods they had brought back from their travels through Missouri & Illinois etc….. This early village grew into what we know today as “Newton” after John Newtons son James A.(Newton) who resided here from 1851 – 1862…. After James A.(Newton) passed away his son John D.(Fenton) continued operations here under new management until about 1909 when it seems things changed for good as all businesses closed except for one - Mr(?) Harry Kempner’s general store which continued operation until around 1951….. It wasn't long before people started arriving here who didn't want to leave their comfortable homes back East…… As time went on more people arrived but due to lack of space many decided to move out or sell all they had while others just parked their cars across the street………….. Most residents left during World War II because food stamp programs made life difficult….. People returned once peace came but shoplifting still occurred so police/firefighters set up watch 24/7……………. Today you can find remnants of society once it existed here like old telephone poles standing proud above everything else………….. Prior to this community only men could vote so females couldn't hold any real power either which limited opportunities for women even today…………… So much has changed since then that few if any remember how things used TO be………… Nowadays we enjoy some great memories attached here such as our annual Oktoberfest celebration which draws thousands every year……… We are blessed with some amazing Legislators including our current Mayor Tom Smithson who has been keeping us going since he was elected 10 years ago!
