Olathe is a city in Kansas, United States. The population was 97,362 at the 2010 census. Olathe is the second-largest city in the state and the county seat of Johnson County. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first Europeans to enter what is now Olathe were French fur traders in 1764. Frenchman Pierre Lacombe explored this area in 1768 while exploring the Kansas Territory. In 1803, General James Kossuth's army landed at Independence Rock on Topeka's southern shore and pushed westward into Indian Territory under the assumption that they would soon find a route to Missouri through this territory. On July 16, 1803, US troops burned down Fort Hennepin in what is now Olathe as part of their punitive expedition against Native American leadersraid by General Stephen F Crook during his war with Mexico known as The Great Plains Expedition (1810-1812). In 1854, when Kansas was admitted to the Union as a new state, Olathe was one of its first municipalities incorporation. On November 15th of that year it had a population of only 2 people; by 1920 it had reached 10,000 residents and became an important center for industry and commerce within Johnson County with main businesses including cotton ginning and flour mills along Main Street downtown and three banks - The First National Bank (founded 1865), Citizens National Bank (founded 1870), and Trust & Savings Bank (founded 1907). During World War II,Olathians supported their country with vigor; however, they were not originally among those living within tornado Alley boundaries which saw extensive damage caused by windstorms on April 15–16th 1945 (the deadliest Jackson County tornado on record). Many residents chose to stay indoors rather than evacuate due to concerns about returning home after days or weeks without power or water supplies; many businesses closed for lack of customers or employees unable to leave their homes.; nevertheless someOlatheans did return home before relief efforts reached them ().
