The Ottawa, Kansas Army Garrison was formed in 1907 when the Kansas National Guard was disbanded. The garrison served as a training ground for the neighboring Wichita Air National Guard until 1911. In 1912, the garrison became an artillery post and was known as Fort Snelling. The fort saw action in World War I and II and also served as a storage center for ammunition. The garrison closed in 1984 but reopened in 1990 as the Garrison Museum. The museum features artifacts from the war era including machine guns, tanks, and artillery pieces. It also houses exhibits about local history and military life in Ottawa.

Ottawa, Kansas is a small town located in Cherokee County, Kansas. The population was 1,869 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Ottawa was founded in 1851 by Nicholas Fenton and his wife Elizabeth. The Fentons were instrumental in helping to build the first railroads in Kansas and also helped to develop what is now Ottawa as a thriving community. Today, Ottawa remains an agricultural center with exports to Mexico and other countries accounting for much of its income. There are also many smaller businesses which contribute to the local economy. The history of Ottawa begins with Nicholas Fenton's arrival in 1851. He had come from England on a ship called the "HMS Nisbet" and he soon found himself in Wichita County, Kansas where he built a homestead on land that he had acquired from Chief Washington Allottee. In addition to his own home, Nicholas provided schooling for his children and also helped run a wagon train that transported goods up the Santa Fe Trail. Over time, Nicholas' son James Fenton took over running the family farm whileNicholas continued to visit Wichita often enough to help out as needed. The town was originally named after Colonel John Ottaway of Virginia who had come to Kansas as an explorer in 1855 and found a site for a new settlement on the Arkansas River near present-day Ottawa. On November 25, 1881, captain George Brown of Boston offered to donate land to the government for the purpose of founding a new town in Sedgwick County; Ottawa became its first community and county seat. The original courthouse was built in 1902 and still stands today within the city limits of Ottawa; it has been used as both a courtroom and Tourism attraction since its renovation in 2006 In recent years there have been proposals for developing much of downtown Ottawa into an Urban village with shared services such as transportation and infrastructure development .
