A coffee shop in Ottawa, Kansas is oldest active coffee house in the state. It was opened in 1865 by Captain Isaac Tilton and his wife, Lillie. The shop was run by Captain Tilton until he died in 1895. His widow continued the business and it was purchased by George Ransom in 1902. In 1916, the Ransom family closed the store due to World War I rationing. A new store opened on Enterprise Street in 1922, but it too closed due to war-time restrictions on coffee beans. In 1951, a new store was opened on University Avenue with a cafe upstairs that served as a lounge for customers who wanted their coffee to be fresh when they got it. The first roast of commercially roasted beans from Brazil made its way into the Ottawa Coffee House cafés around this time. In 1964, Mr. John Sayers took over management of the Ottawa Coffee House and increased operations day and night including rotating roasts of all different origins from various parts of the world which were brought into the house for testing before being placed into our regular rotation The first cup of Joe ever brewed at OCHO originated from a French press artichoke roast that Mr Sayers obtained while visiting an artisanal café near him while researching some ideas for his own restaurant concept back then called "The Café de Paris". roast began serving as our regular morning blend during this time along with unique blends like Roastmaster XO which we debuted during this period
