The first coffee roaster in Parsons was the Hass Brothers Coffee Company. They roasted their own beans and also contracted with local farmers to purchase their beans. In 1905, the Coffey Coffee and Tea Company opened up shop in Parsons and started selling fresh roasted coffee. This company was known for its smooth, rich flavor and high quality standards. The Coffey Coffee and Tea Company continued to beOperator until 1976 when it merged with the Hennig Family Corporation. With this merger, the Hennig family became the operator of all of the major grocery stores in Lawrence County. In 1985, two new companies were founded in Parsons; One was called Roasters Incorporated and they operated a small roast shop inside of one of the largest department stores in town- The other company was called First National Coffee Co., which imported fresh roasted beans from Europe and began selling them within town limits as well as at local businesses. First National CoffeeCo.'s business grew rapidly after World War II and soon became one of the top roasters in town. In 1990,First National CoffeeCo.'s parent company merged with Brown & Williamson Companies- an American multinational corporation- making it one of America's leading coffee companies along with Starbucks Corporation (which originated from Peet's Cafe). After almost fifty years as a major player intown life, First National CoffeeCo.'S ceased operations on November 5th 2010 due to financial difficulties caused bythe changing global economy

The community grew rapidly after it became associated with the cattle industry; by 1870 there were over 100 businesses in the town. Parsons, Kansas is a small town in Riley County, Kansas, located on the east bank of the Arkansas River. Parsons was founded in 1881 by James Parsons and his wife Anna. The community was named for General George A. Parsons, who served as an advisor to President Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. The population of Parsons at the 2010 census was 627. The first post office in Parsons was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first store opened in 1888 and continued to serve the community until 1925. In 1902, a telephone line was built through Parsons and connected with nearby Topeka. The second store closed in 1926 and replaced by a gas station. In 1951, Wichita State University (Wichita) moved from Topeka to Parsons after years of effort by local residents. On July 1, 1959, Wichita State College merged with Wichita State University to become Wichita State University-Kansas (WSU-K). On September 17th of that year the name change was finalized when WSU-K became Wichita State University
