In 1839, Bardstown resident George Washington Coffee began to sell coffee beans from a small roasting house in the town. By 1840, he had built a larger roasting and marketing business in the same building. In 1845, he founded The Courier Publishing Company with his brother-in-law David Garrick Caldwell. The company published local newspapers and magazines throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. Coffee became popularized in America during the late 19th century as a result of its health benefits. Large grocery stores began stockingmagazine subscriptions in order to get early news of new agricultural discoveries or other events affecting the country's economy. Because of this exposure, coffee became associated with Americana and sophistication. As more people moved into rural areas and started growing their own crops, they needed reliable transportation options for goods brought in by ship or wagon. Bardstown has been designated as a National Historical Landmark since 1987 . In that year, it commemorated 100 years since Elijah Hicks organized local farmers into a cooperative to provide seed food for American troops during World War I

In 1814, it became a parish (or church) with jurisdiction over all of Knox County. The first courthouse in Bardstown was built in 1821 and burned down in 1838. A new courthouse was built between 1850 and 1860 and remains standing today. The community grew rapidly after World War II when defense industries began to develop here; Bardstown has since become one of the most important economic centers inKnox County. Businesses include shipyards, Motorola Mobility, Ford Motor Company, Coca Cola Bottling Plant #1 and many more. In recent years there has been some redevelopment around Fountain Square which includes two hotels/resorts ("The Renaissance" and "Scottish Highlands") as well as several large office buildings including The Bank Of America Tower which overlooks the Cumberland River Valley below while also allowing views of downtown Bardstown from many floors up; OneWest Shopping Center across Interstate 25 from Scottish Highlands offers larger stores than usual within walking distance while Courtyard by Marriott is just minutes away off I-25 on Broadway Avenue for visitors who want to stay longer or take advantage of their hotel's shuttle service to get around town; both have made some effort to try to attract nightlife features like live music venues or bars that might be less visible if located elsewhere in town but are still worth checking out for anyone looking for a little bit more convenience than they would likely find nearby."
