Marines Deployed Gift History in Berea, Kentucky began in 1907 when Father John P. de Sales arrived in Berea, Kentucky to become the first Catholic priest in that community. He founded the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes and soon started giving donations of items such as radios, bicycles, and clothing to local Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune. In 1943, during World War II, Father John P. de Sales was asked by then-Mayor Harry S. Truman to establish a Marine Corps gift shop within the city limits of Berea so that servicemen could purchase items for their families back home. The shop continued operation until 1959 when it was moved to its current location on Elm Street near downtown Berea. The store has been Family Fun since 1957 and is now owned and operated by Captain James Kapp from Lexington, Kentucky. It stocks various vehicles including Humvees and armored personnel carriers as well as gifts for both children and adults such as baseball bats, golf clubs, camping gear and more! The store also offers tastefully-dressed Marines an opportunity to show their support for our Armed Forces with a special gift or visit one of our many departments including Artifacts & Memorabilia (AGM), Sporting Goods (SG), Children's Department (CHD), Naval Ship Store (NSS) or even the Marine Bandstand which sells officially licensed live music every Saturday evening! In addition to its retail presence, Family Fun operates several donation drives each year throughout the school year which provide much-needed supplies to military families living locally or visiting Berea! Berea, Kentucky is a small town located in Belknap County, Kentucky. The population was 4,827 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from Berea College which was founded in 1864. After Berea College closed its doors in 1984, the town renamed itself after their main player on the football field back then, Dick Butkus. The area that now makes up Berea was first settled by people from northern Indiana and Ohio in the 17th century. In 1800, General James Wilkinson named this area for Colonel John Berea of Waynesboro Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. A post office called Berea was established in 1812, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1837. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Berea were Methodists who came to live near Cincinnati during the 1840s as part of a group known as "The Rodale Fathers." The Methodists built churches and schools around here and started religious services while they waited for railroads to come through so they could move their congregations away from disapproving southern families. By 1849 there were only two houses left standing on Main Street- one belonging to Reuben Warrick and his wife Sarah (Porter), the other to Solomon Morse (Fowler). In 1865 local business man David Waddell donated land east of downtown for use as a military reservation used by Kentucky cavalry troopers during the Mexican-American War. This spot would later become home to Berea High School which opened its doors on September 15th of that year with just fourteen students enrolled. Up until about 1870 when Locust Grove Clearwater Distillery began operations northeast of downtown Berea some residents still used wagons drawn by teams of four horses pulled by dogs or mules to bring goods into town because no cars existed at that time! For many years there was also a blacksmith shop located along Main Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North where forge work took place on large pieces of artillery hardware including cannons and carriages made from cast iron! Over time more businesses cropped up around downtown such as grocery stores (Goudy's), druggist shops (Johnson & Johnson), lawyers' offices (Sweeney)and banks (First National). Some buildings that remain today include: Court House Annex building which served as an administrative center for city government; Masonic Temple which still stands today as a historical landmark; Mayor's Building now used as apartments; Post Office Annex building now functions primarily as a library; Harlan Hardware Store building now serves as apartments upstairs; original fire hall/pumpkin patch located just south of downtown off Third Street before it been moved across Third Street towards Fourth Avenue...thus creating what is currently known collectively throughout most if not all parts surrounding this small central core hamlet simply as "Berea"! There have been multiple changes taking place within much wider community since 1860 when David Waddell donated land east of downtown for useas Cavalry Reserve - one being increased horsedrawn traffic due mostly to increase production at Locust Grove Clearwater Distillery adjacent north on 3rd street prior mentioned - thus necessitating rerouting 2nd avenue past Old Hickory Furnace onto new Third St once again becoming "Downtown" almost certainly resulting in eventual relocation / demolition / rebuilding various storefronts/facades associated with said old distillery complex following periods OF heavy rainsstorms flooding streets & watermarking lots exteriorly including Ladies Tailor Shop frontage dating back over 100 yrs ago (& demolished circa 1969!))...thus creating what remains currently known collectively throughout most if not all parts surrounding this small central core hamlet simply AS "Berea"!

Berea, Kentucky is a town in Clark County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,694 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Berea Township and the surrounding countryside. The first settler in Berea was David Putnam in 1792. The town was platted in 1815 by John Hays. It became a part of Clark County on November 1, 1825. In 1870, the county seat moved to Paducah and Berea stopped having a courthouse. A new courthouse was built in 1922 and remains standing today as the only one remaining original building from the early days of Berea. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his headquarters at Berea after crossing the Ohio River into Union territory to join General Ulysses S. Grant's army opposing Abraham Lincoln's presidential campaign. Union General George Meade destroyed most of Ewell's forces at battle near Winchester on April 12, 1862; however, Ewell escaped back to Confederate territory with some bitterness still lingerin
