Campbellsville is a town in Sullivan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Sullivan County. The first person to set foot in Campbellsville was David Campbell in 1770. He built a log cabin on a hill in what is now the town square and named it after his father-in-law, James Campbell of Glasgow, Scotland. David and his wife had six children before he died in 1818 and she took over the family home and continued to live there until her death in 1851. In 1868, John Sibley founded an adjacent community called Eastmoreland and moved his family there from Campbellsville. Eastmoreland grew rapidly due to its fertile land, good schools, and railroads that connected it with larger cities throughout America. By 1890 it had a population of 11,000 people and by 1930 it had reached 20,000 people. However, during World War II Campbellsville experienced great difficulty as many of its residents enlisted for military service because they were unaware of the war effort and did not have anything else to do. A few years later when the war ended most of those who had enlisted returned home but some chose to stay on basis of their patriotism or business opportunities which emerged post-war. In 1954 Community Services Corporation (CSC) organized initial services for low income families living in area housing projects through organizations like feeding programs for street kids/street dogs/infants/widows & orphans or providing medication & clothing for homeless veterans etc.. CSC also started daycare facilities for pre-schoolers & kindergartners thru local churches then gradually increased program until 1980 when all childcare ended except special needs program which continues today thru ServeWellKids Inc.).
