Campbellsville is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1807 by Ulysses S. Grant and his family as Campbelltown on land granted to them by General James K. Polk. The name was changed to Campbellsville in 1827 after General David Campbell who had served with General Polk during the Mexican War and then became a United States Senator from Kentucky in 1850. In 1865, Confederate Major General Jubal Early forced Union forces out of Kentucky and into Tennessee, and then marched through Pike County towards Lynchburg, Virginia withoutopposing resistance. A group of residents of Campbellsville decided to stay behind to help defend their homes against Early's army, and the name for the town changed back to Campbellsville in 1865. The post office at Campbellsville was established in 1867, and remained open until it closed on November 5, 1930.
